Perfview Graphs

Reading through the info on generating meaningful graphs I still do not find how? Does Perfview have the capability to generate graphs, if so, what is the utility, does it run on the unix box or is there a utility that generates the graphs that is pc based? if the utility runs on on the unix box, then how do you print the colored graphs? I have also tried downloading "extracted" data but the dataset is way too much, overkill and to refine what is collected so that you only get the basics (cpu, memory and i/o) is not a simple matter (requires reading and knowing the collection parameters). Does anyone have usable and simple performance collection process/utilities?

Re: Perfview Graphs

Perfview can generate graphs from measure ware data that was collected on a machine. Perfview and MesaureWare are distinctly different products and are sold as separate products.

Perfview does run on a unix box and is an X application. You can print the graphs on any printer attached to your network. Older versions could print to PCL printers I think I heard that newer versions of PerfView can only print to PostScript printers. If you want to print color graphs you need a color printer.

PerfView is available as a 30 day trial on the Application CDs. I don't remember which one specifically.

The command to run Perfview once you get it installed is 'pv'.

Hope this helps.

Re: Perfview Graphs

Perfview has been replaced by the VantagePoint Performance Manager and measureware by VantagePoint Performance Agent

Re: Perfview Graphs

Thanks Guys, I have made a bit of progress and at this point the snag is only printing the color graphs that display on my xterm. I setup an HP DJ1600C Color printer [selected the associated driver from within Jetadmin]and I can print to it from the unix command line but after setting it up as a default printer in "pv", graphs that I print to it from pv vanish. I then tried printing to a file and then lp'ing' the pv graph file to the queue but although in both cases it creates a job number, I never see the job in the queue, there are no error messages, the job just vanishes. This may have to do with the print driver or it may be I am missing something, like a patch or ??? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Perfview Graphs

Make sure you set up the printer from the main window of PerfView (Settings -> Printers). I've had no luck when trying to configure printing after leaving the main screen even though there are options to do so.

Re: Perfview Graphs

Does your printer support both PCL and PostScript?

I don't know about the current version of perfview, but the version I am running at the office has an option to select which language you want to print with. You might check and see if you have that option and play with it and see what happens.

Have you checked the printer display (if that DJ has a display) to see if there are any error messages from the printer?

Re: Perfview Graphs

Another thing to try:

1) disable the print queue on your machine
2) generate perfview graphs
3) check print queue to see if jobs are there
4) enable print queue
5) check printer to see if any messages on printer display

If the jobs show up in the print queue with the queue disabled, then the problem probably lies with the printer, or the jobs getting to the printer.

If the jobs do not show up in the print queue with the queue disabled, then the problem may be with perfview not submitting the jobs correctly or with the set up of the printer within perfview.
