Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Hi All,

Once again, please provide feedback on any technical issues you may encounter while using the forums during August.

Please include URLs from your browser associated with error messages, and please include the date and time the errors occur.

You can also post your forums **successes** for August at:

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=654077

Thanks for your feedback!

Best regards,
Dan

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Dan,

One major issue is the fact that this thread is not advertised at all on the BSF.

The link for forum issues on the right side bar of the BSF, takes us to a Thread dated from April. I understand this is the most active area of both forums, but there are many people on both sides of the fence that don't visit the other forum, whether it be ITRC or BSF.

As I pointed out in another thread, it would be nice if we had some sort of timeline for the old 'issues' threads as to when the different things will be implemented if at all.

Otherwise it seems as if there are new threads, but nothing is being done about any of the problems.

Hi Dan,

On the forums home page, the success page still points to the old one (June).

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

TJ - We'll get that thread updated on the BSF side. As far as updates, the feedback we receive is collected and rolled into next releases as we can. Pete Randell tracks what is still outstanding and usually posts it here each month. I'll post a list of updates/fixes that come out in the next release, which should be by end of the month.

Michael - thanks for pointing that out, the link is now updated!

Gary - thanks for the cleanup.

Thanks,

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Thanks for the reminder, Dan!

My monthly attempt to summarize the most grievous, most oft-repeated issues

1) Recover the content lost during the 9/20/03 conversion/update - there are
numerous threads which suffered partial content loss, Merijn's statistics
postings being a prime example. Other examples point out that the benefit of
the ITRC database as a resource has been severely compromised. An excellent
dialog on wiping disks via various commands has now been rendered non-sensical
because much of it has been lost.

2) Clarify more distinctly the meaning of the new message button within a
thread so it will no longer be confused with the reply button.

3) Create a new category under HP-UX for congratulations, humor and other
miscellaneous off-topic threads so that those who don't wish to view these
items can bypass them.

4) Show the poster's name in the reply window.

5) Repeat the bread crumb navigation links at the bottom of the page so we
don't have to page all the way up to the top of long threads. Also, add the
same links to the notification pages.

6) Could we possibly have a real, functional search engine? Please??

7) Other forms of URLs need to be recognized (https, ftp) as the http ones
are.

8) Allow for formatted text that does not lose spaces, so script snippets can
be understood.

9) Provide the ability for a user to customize the forum subjects they view by
setting up their own groupings (like: all of HP-UX, plus Servers (9000), plus
Workstations (hp-ux based), plus all of Storage - well, you get the idea).

10) From Merijn: The ability to have a fixed signature in one's profile.

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Dan,

These forums don't support HTML or anytype of code such as [b] or [i] like every other forum does. So what I did manage to copy and past in, after editing it, looks like garbage.

I would also respectively ask that this not be deleted as there are several items regarding forum issues:

1. Lack of Response by users - Users should not have the option to not recieve e-mails when they author a message

2. Length of messages, If I get a 6 page message from HP, I should be able to post it at once, with my commentary without having to break it up.

3. Ease of contact - These forums need to allow easier contact of other members, this has been brought up time and time again. Many places have private messaging or e-mail through a private secure site.

4. Coding - This site is in the stone ages without its HTML or simply code supports. At least give the basic Bold and Italics, so I DONT HAVE TO YELL IN CAPS.

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

On another note Dan,

I still cannot see my latest threads that I have created in my profile. I brought this up several weeks ago, and somebody did something to update them, however they haven't stuck.

We do appreciate your help, as you can probably understand we are rather annoyed at HP in general over in the BSF, for ignoring us and thousands just like us.

Please delete:
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=655054

is it an accidental branch from

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=654889

Really... that "new message" button on the bottom of the topics should probably not exist. Keep the one on the top, or just the one at the group/family pages.

Hein.

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Pete, thanks for the updated list. We'll be addressing a few of these (and others not on the list) in a few weeks in the next release.

SEP, good idea on the hat, will look into that one.

TJ, if I'm reading your question correctly, all of your posted questions are found under "more" in the list of "my questions". If you click on "more", you'll find your posted threads at http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/pageList.do?userId=CA1128041&listType=question&forumId=1
Let me know if you were referring to something else.

Hein, we will be deploying a new button named 'start new thread'

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Dan,

That is what I am referring to, but shouldn't the most recent be appearing on my profile? I shouldn't have to dig and go to the more, to find other posts.

Thanks for your help

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Hi TJ, sorry about that little omission. That particular list is a bit buggy, but we are relasing a fix along with a number of other items in about 3-4 weeks time. Please standby until then, sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Is there any known reason why the forums servers are responding poorly ? For the past few days, my access to forums were painful at best, sometimes not possible at all.

I was wondering if it is just me.

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Mel,
It is not just you. I think you are feeling the pain from some routine server maintenance that is being performed.

See if navigating to the main page and then onto the forums improves the performance:

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Network response, overnight and this morning has been extremely poor. There were several moments of complete loss of access overnight.

It might be prudent if people do as I have done and request a moderator withdraw a post. I've hit the submit button and regretted more than a few times.

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Dan:

It sure would be nice that when you click to open an attachment that it would open in a new window (target="_blank") instead of the current window. Is there any way to code the attachments that way?
Enjoy!

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

All,

I would like to remind folks that the purpose of the ITRC Forums are for peer-peer discussions in support of IT environments. The forums are comprised of a community of members, however, HP sets the guidelines for acceptable content, usage, and activity.

Any and all messages are subject to review, including those posted in this thread. As stated in this thread's original message, the thread is intended for reporting technical issues related to using the forums. A good example are the above messages posted by Michael Schulte and John Ruffo regarding opening attachments.

This thread, and these forums, are not a place to slam HP, slam moderators, demand particular usage guidelines, or insist on HP replies to product issues. This is a peer-peer resource with no guarantee of an HP response, as clearly stated in the purpose statement on the forums home page.

Again, the purpose of this free service is to allow you to solve problems and exchange ideas with peers. Not all of your HP issues will be solved here. If you have a particluar gripe about an HP product or service, you need to contact the appropriate HP group by going to http://www.hp.com and clicking on "contact hp". Please keep this community civil, as it has been for the past 4+ years.

Regards,
Dan

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Dan,Maybe this is the same as #8 on Pete's list. Each sentence of this post is on a separate line, separated by two 's, but those characters seem to get lost when I use a Konqueror or Mozilla browser from my Linux boxes. Is this a problem at my end or a browser support issue with the ITRC?If it's an ITRC issue, is better browser support planned? Thanks!Dave

belongs in the Pavilion section. Could you move it, please? Thanks!

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Hi Dave,

It is most likely a browser issue. The ITRC is tested to support IE and Netscape, although Opera and Mozilla obviously work. I just tested what you reported with IE6 and the carriage returns are maintained. I have not heard of plans to broaden the browser support.

Dan
