Please Post Your ITRC Forums Successes for January 2003!

Hi Everyone,

Please submit your highlights and successes you have had while using the ITRC Forums. Your feedback helps convey the positive influences the forums have had on your IT life. For example, have you:

1. Posted a question and received a key answer that solved your problem?
2. Have you viewed a message thread that had a solution to a problem you were trying to solve?
3. Found the Forums to be of particular help in sharing information, exchanging best practices, or saving you time?

I'd really like to hear from everyone -- your circumstances, the issues, the outcome, who was of help, time saved, etc.! If you have examples to share, please provide the URL of the thread if possible.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Best Regards,

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Successes for January 2003!

First day of the year started out great. :( The 'boss' rebooted a server which had been up for almost a year........ and after reboot the lp daemon wasn't running. After he gave it several tries it turned out lp just died immediatly after starting. 'Boss' already had phone in hand to call an engineer, I pursuaded him to let me browse the ITRC for a while.
After reading some 75 problems that looked similar but had actually nothing to do with my problem I found the solution (as I had expected) right here on the ITRC. Turns out 'someone' had changed the ownership settings of the hosts file during that year of uptime. After correcting that everything was running smoothly again. An ITRC success on the first day of the year. That must be a good sign. :)

Bart, great story...thanks. The 'ol reboot will get you everytime. :) Clay Stephenson has said a few things about rebooting a perfectly fine machine. Glad to hear things worked out and that the ITRC forums could be of use.

Thanks,

Lois, way to go to reach your father's status :)
Father, if you think like me, you'll appreciate the title 'father' a lot more than 'King', 'Pharaoh', 'Rookie', or whatever. Remember that there's only a few people that can say 'father' or (maybe even better) 'daddy' to you!

Enjoy, have FUN! H.Merijn (happy father of an 8-year old daughter and a 4 year old son who keep telling me he's not 4 but 4??)

What's ITRC experience compared to parent experience? You learn FAST.

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Successes for January 2003!

One of my successses this month was not only earing my ITRC pro status but also earning almost 100 points so far this month.

From a business standpoint we had a Disaster Recovery test that went extreemly well due to some scripting on my part.

From a personal starnpoint I'll be 29 years old, alive and married - I consider this to be successful :)

Hi Folks!

First, yes, a big:

CONGRATULATIONS Bill M!

I echo Merijn's sentiments, here. The most wonderful title in all creation is "Daddy" for a father and "Mommy" for a mother. My wife and I have two miraculous daughters (15 & 16 years old) who remind us of it whenever we need.

Regards!

Speaking of points, Dan, I think Bill deserves a rabbit (the one that didn't die) for his announcement, don't you?

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Successes for January 2003!

I posted a question on how to switch a Linux machine to a fully qualified hostname late 12-31-2002

After my wife had gone upstairs after drinking a bit of wine with me the answer was posted.

It was correct, it solved my problem and it came just after midnight.

I just got off the phone with an openspool guy, who picked up on a call that I'd let slip off the radar screen.

He went through his old calls and emailed me over the weekend offering to pick up the call, which he did a few minutes ago.

Great stuff.

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Successes for January 2003!

Because HP's telnet does not allow the passing of the DISPLAY variable, I had to come up with an alternate method. Searching The itrc forum I found various tricks and I was able to get a solution and modify it so that it works in our situation.

I modified the "nslookup" in this attachment from Tim Malnati: http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/components/FileAttachment/0,,0x167e37f45ef7d4118fef0090279cd0f9,00.txt
which can be found in this thread http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x4f7d37f45ef7d4118fef0090279cd0f9,00.html
replacing the "nslookup" with a "ping":
REMOTENAME=$(/usr/sbin/ping ${REMOTEHOST:-localhost} 83 -n 1 | head -2 | tail -1 | cut -d: -f1 | sed "s/83 bytes from //")

thanks forum and thanks Tim Malnati!

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Successes for January 2003!

Highlight? Success?

Here's one..........

A prospective employer wanted to know how good I was. I point them to the ITRC and let them read some of my answers to others questions.

Got the job.

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Successes for January 2003!

I'm getting awesome feedback on Linux/Firewall/DNS networking problems, and pretty good feedback on an Oracle Migration problem.

I already got points. No need to add any.

Solution

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Successes for January 2003!

Its actually been about a year since I did any major disk work other than recovery from disk failures on an old D box.

Today months behind schedule, I was finally allocated space on the company disk array, a Xiotech Magnitude (Poor man's EMC).

I needed to create a new volume group, knew I needed to use mknod but could not remember the exact syntax.

I did a search for vgcreate and mknod and got the answer for building the volume group.

Then I realized I needed to use the -e command to allow for more total disk units in the volume group.

So I needed to get rid of the volume group, needed to deactivate it and then vgremove it.

Of course I couldn't remember the syntax so I ran a keyword search and found the perfect post. I was actually able to cut and paste the commands from the post in this case right into my telnet session, made a few changes and was done.

Then I did the vgcreate properly with the -e and was done.

Another great use of the itrc forums.

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Successes for January 2003!

Dan:

Due to the tight economy, the company I work for won't spend money on things like new equipment, software, training, or even books. This has been the case for the past couple of years. It's pretty depressing.

I support a small engineering group. A couple years ago we upgraded our C240 to a J6000. Unfortunately it did not have a tape drive or cdrom. Recently, a tape drive was scrounged-up and mgt wanted me to connect it to our J6000. Using the HP ITRC forum, I was able to post questions and do searches to get all the answers I needed to get the drive functional. I got information about the J6000 external ultra 2 lvd/se scsi, about the logical volumes attached to the ext scsi, device files, and even the mc command. http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x10b34a988422d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x0eb44a988422d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

I also got lots of valuable information about copying oracle databases. This morning I completed copying the DB, which was no small effort. http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x2a7eef70e827d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

Many of the questions I've had have been a bit off-the-wall. Unfortunately, I'm stuck using what's free. One other concern I have is that I haven't been getting as much help from the salad heads as I used to. I'm not sure why.

The ITRC has become a very valuable resource to me. Keep up the excellent work!

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Successes for January 2003!

Hi Dan,
I'm still having a problem with point assignment.
After assigning points I receive the point assignment confirmation message. Later in the day I'll go back to the message and the points won't be assigne. This could be part of the problem with users complaining about not getting points assigned to their responses.

Dan, for me the same as with Richard. Have to submit points twice. Always. For ages. Using either Opera (any version) or Phoenix.
