Hi Dan,

The search engine is kaput. I can't search anything, patch database or anything at all.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - December 2003!

Hi Dan,

Just an idea, but maybe when you start the monthly issues thread you could post a list of the open issues that your developers are still working on. That might help cut down on some of the redundant posts about problems, and also prompt people to post issues that haven't been addressed.

Just a suggestion. Keep up the good work!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - December 2003!

Search engine is not returning 10.20 manuals.

In addition, due to some sort of rearrangement, lots of links in older itrc posts don't work any more. This seems especially nasty with regards to technical knowledgebase articles.

When possible it would be a good idea to leave a transfer doc at the old url when they tidy things up.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - December 2003!

Dan,

The monthly request list. Now sorted in priority order (my priority, anyway). Please note the items corrected i
n the Sept 20 update have been moved to a separate section at the end of the list for now so that we can all appr
eciate the efforts that you and the team put forth:

1) Recover the content lost during the 9/20/03 conversion/update - there are numerous threads which suffered par
tial content loss, Merijn's statistics postings being a prime example.

2) Fix the occasional (but all too frequent) "unavailable" and "404" errors which can make the forums unusable f
or hours at a time.

3) Create a new category under HP-UX for congratulations, humor and other miscellaneous off-topic threads so tha
t those who don't wish to view these items can bypass them.

4) Show the poster's name in the reply window.

5) Repeat the bread crumb navigation links at the bottom of the page so we don't have to page all the way up to
the top of long threads. Also, add the same links to the notification pages.

6) Pre-assign 0 points to all answers. This eliminates the whining about not assigning points and the obsessive
pursuit of 100% point assignment ratios. Alternatively, eliminate the tracking of points assignment ratios.

7) Could we possibly have a real, functional search engine? Please??

8) Could we have some sort of convergence between the US and European sites? They can't get to our URLs, we can
't get to theirs, Merijn gets the wrong search engine - why do they have to be separate and different?

9) Other forms of URLs need to be recognized (https, ftp) as the http ones are.

10) Allow for formatted text that does not lose spaces, so script snippets can be understood.

11) Provide the ability for a user to customize the forum subjects they view by setting up their own groupings (
like: all of HP-UX, plus Servers (9000), plus Workstations (hp-ux based), plus all of Storage - well, you get the
idea).

12) Limit the amount of space taken up by "masthead" stuff (headings, descriptions, rankings, etc. at the top of
the page) so we can actually see some questions. This is now worse than ever - I have to page down just to see
the first question.

13) From Merijn: The ability to have a fixed signature in one's profile.

The following are former issues, fixed in the last major update:

The slow submit issue that causes so many duplicate postings and duplicate replies seems to have been completely
eradicated, thanks!

The same is true for inablility to assign points issue, thanks!

And also for: (Borrowing from JRF: could you please *not* preload "databases" (just because it is the lexicograph
ically first item). Instead, make the user choose the correct category.) Thanks!

Now, when a question is moved, the link points directly to the question, rather than just to the category, thanks
!

And a longstanding from me again: use relative width: 100%, so I dond have to scoll though pages full that are only filled on the left side.

Wide screens are gaining fast. Even laptops have 16:10 nowadays

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - December 2003!

Hi Pete/Dan,

what's about possibility of correct the spelling of your own threads
and
to close a own thread?

'Pre-assign 0 points': till now you can't change the points you have given. So you have to differentiate between '0 pts' and 'pre-assigned 0 pts'?

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - December 2003!

Mozilla HP-UX 1.4 is generating constant redirect limit errors.

IE does not do this.

Help, your fonts disappeared in IE and I can't get them back.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - December 2003!

Dan, my suggestions are:

1) To Give the possibility of to close thread (naturally only to owner of question) clicking on new button (close-thread).
The question closed, can to be recognized by padlock icon (or other symbol).

This avoids to display, in the first positions, questions very old or definitively solved and Avoids answers to questions obsolete.

2) The idea of John Poff is useful, i agree.
"when you start the monthly issues thread you could post a list of the open issues that your developers are still working on"

3) Create a new category for congratulations and others things various no technical.

4) Possibility of correction the spelling of your own threads, because the meaning of the words are very important. In My answer I have confused "change some parameters" with "change same parameters" but the meaning is different !

Help you all user of Language not English/American.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - December 2003!

Why did Pete not include the date issue? Does he not care? It's a daily nuisance

15 Dec 2003 or 20031215 please!

I don't care if it has to be set in the user profile or manually in a cookie, but I want understandable dates

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - December 2003!

Merijn,

I spent time in the military and time as a programmer. I can deal with dates in most any form. Since it doesn't bother me anywhere near as much as it seems to bother you, I'll leave it to you to bring up!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - December 2003!

Dan,

I can agree with Merijn's suggestion to have the date format selectable in a person's user profile.

Merijn,

I used to work for a company in the US that had regular dealing with a company based in the Netherlands. Each office used the date format that they normally used. No one complained. We all dealt with it just fine.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - December 2003!

Dan,

When doing a search for Congratulations, I was getting 8-10 hits (should be a lot more), but they all came up with the incorrect date. I actually posted to two of them before I noticed that the dates were actually from much earlier this year. Thankfully, someone noticed and issued 0 points for myself and those that followed me down the wrong path.

Is there a reason the search is returning the same date for all the listings? Today it is returning about 40 hits total, but most of them still have the wrong date associated. I would also expect to get several hundred hits on this search. I believe the forums have been universally posted since at least '98 (and some members go back as far as '96).

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - December 2003!

One more thing,

I was looking at some of my e-mail earlier this week, and came across a note from Marc Dijkstra. He did me a big favor back in Nov 2001. I wanted to see how he is doing, but the email bounced, so I thought I would look up some of his current posts on the forums. I was unable to find him as a member at all. What happens to accounts that are left un-attended for extremely long periods of time? And, is he actually still a member of the forums?
If I remember correctly he actually had a fair number of points even back then.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - December 2003!

Angus,

Do you mean this Marc Dijkstra?

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/publicProfile.do?forumId=1&userId=BR191434

Supposedly, his last contribution date was November 26, 2003.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - December 2003!

Pete,

thanks, "South Africa" sounds about right. I guess he has changed jobs.
Can you tell me what you used to find his name? My searches pulled up a few names, but none of them were Marc Dijkstra.
