Points

I have provided help in the past including MIBs for Cisco devices and I was awarded zero points. I even had people contact me months later for the MIB file, again zero points. I allocate points and I recommend others do the same event to just say thanks.

Re: Points

Hi,
unfortunatly point assignment is not compulsory.

It is related to the well behaviour of us that use (and some abuse) of the forum.

This question has been addressed many times, and is an integrant part of the Forum Etiquette.

But we are not all the same...

Re: Points

Common gripe.. I used to get really frustrated with this, but what can you do.....

I gave up doing the forums for about 6 months for this very reason, in the end you need to decide if you like helping people aside from the points (lets face it, points are really a minor recognition)

Re: Points

Just one extra "point" (sorry could not resist). Just think how many points A.Clay or James F would have now if points were assigned in-line with the forums intension. I'm figuring in the millions!!

Re: Points

We can only control or change ourselves.

So I congratulate you on your willingness to help others - I hope it continues. For giving freely truly is it's own reward....it's makes us better people.
If everyone gave freely (even in assigning points) how much better things would be.
But if you have to force someone to give points....than the message is missed by the person being forced - and has gotten 'lost' by the person doing the forcing .
Remember 1 point here:
Keep your perspective....for many of us truly value (although we can not assign you points on those threads) your contributions !!!

Kindest Regards,
Rita

Re: Points

Paul,

As others have noted, this topic has been discussed in detail. Here is an apropos thread authored by Paula. Practically every regular weighed in, including HP employees:

http://bizforums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x96b70bce6f33d6118fff0090279cd0f9,00.html

The only real mystery to me about this: Some people have gone well out of their way to thank me in writing for my suggestions. Yet they assign zero points? I am totally baffled by this behavior.

I am here to contribute what I can to the forum community. Sometimes my suggestions are corrected or enhanced by others, which makes me a better tech. Accumulating points is not the main goal.

Re: Points

Recent statistics show that 55% of answer posts garner points.

If you look at Merijn's stats page you will see the point total I have is due to sheer persistance. Keep posting answers and you will get points.

I agree with you. If a person is posting their first question, or has a bad ratio of points to answers, I generally add a reminder at the end of my answer.

Re: Points

I'm going to save a lot of time here today as I'm pretty busy.
Jay posted a link to a thread that Paula had started. Go to the Shannon Petry reply on October 04, 2002 at 14:59 PM GMT.
Pretty much sums it up for me. Now referring to one of Shannon's points, don't give me any points here. I just cut and pasted, simply echoing the same thoughts.

Re: Points

Paul - I've found that many people don't assign points even if the answer completely solves their problem... and they've even taken the time to post back and tell you so.... yet still don't assign points....

If everyone assigned points i'm sure you'd be seeing a lot more olympians here.... but unfortunaltely the point system is voluntary. But there are a lot of people assigning who do assign points and participate fully in the forum...

best of luck

Re: Points

I've been disappointed in not receiving points for what I thought were good answers. There are times when I look to see how many responses have been assigned points before making the effort to respond. This defeats the purpose of this forum so I don't do it too often.

Re: Points

I'm not going to defend these people but I have to imagine many of them come in and are in just to get their problem solved and don't spend much time worrying about or reading up on the etiquette. I was a member for a year before understanding the importance of the points, I awarded them but I wasn't 100%.

That being said, there are abusers and it is irritating.... I look at it this way, I haven't been participating long but I know I've either solved or helped to solve a few issues and gotten a "Thanks" but no points. 10 points won't make me feel better at the end of the day, but the "Thanks" will.

There are some good points up above. Imagine how many points some of the regulars are missing out on.

I wonder if my attitude would change if the points actually had value? lol

Re: Points

Ok,
i see if points are awarded for two reasons.

1. i know whether the reply i provided has helped the poster or not.

2. some amount of satisfaction for myself.

both can be acheived if the poster just says a single word. "Thanks". But what i have seen is that people mostly come here to get their problems solved. and once it is done, they just forget this forum. the next time they remember is when they have a new problem. there is also another creed of people who are around the forum regularly with lots of question but doesnt care to show the appreciation. i try reminding them a few times but then i just forget.

its all how u take it.

but keep doing the good work.

Re: Points

Is there a way that we could find the one who has

asked the most questions
or
got the most replies

without assigning points?

Maybe we could have it become a regular feature, like "Hog of the Month" - I know a few sysadmins who are just obverse enough that they would wear the moniker with pride.

Re: Points

Sorrel,

The statistics you request do not get run by Merijn at this time.

You can go to HP-UX general, find the stats thread and post a question for Merijn. He may be able to run those statistics for you.

He is on holiday until month end though.

Re: Points

Hi,

I agree most with Balaji.
Looking at questions, I can most of the time feel if I can get points on helping or not. I reply even though I know I won't get anything else that someone forgetting about here up to his or her next problem.

What about all those ideas on being more suggestive with points, like hog of the mont, or even 5 questios and no points -> you have to assign before asking one more time ? As all of you say, they have been suggested more, but they stay threads ? What Dan and the others think abou it ?

(plz 0 here).
