Print timeout on remote printer rlp, printer disabled, return code 1

Hello,
we are using HP-UX 11i (11.11).
We have about 20 printers attached to network adapters. Sometimes when a printer is offline or has a big job(s) to print, RLP times out when sending jobs to the printer and aborts it with return code 1.

The result is that the interface script disables the printer and stops sending to the printer.
Someone when we try to print a very big job, the printer prints the first pages unfinitly because the printer is always disabled and then enabled of us.

Is there a better solution than using rlp to do this job?
Can we adjust this timeout time of rlp?

This is very bad and does cost too much time every day.
