Printer won't print !

Hi,

I have a dot-matrix printer configured in HP-UX.

lpstat -t shows that the printer is enabled and is accepting requests since Jan 16.
But when I issue an lp command to print a file, it doesn't print. however, it doesn't give an error too !

There shouldn't be a network problem as it is printing fine from Windows.

please guide.

Thanks,
Sunil.

Re: Printer won't print !

Hi,

My best guess is that you chose the wrong model script. I would first examine /var/spool/lp/log for clues. I assume this is a network printer, so
jetadmin -> Diagnostics
First test printer's accessibility
Next Print a test page to printer

This should point you to the problem.

Re: Printer won't print !

Thanks Paula and Clay.

I noticed that we have three printers on the same print queue (same IP Address, different names). So I am able to ping to that IP.

lpstat just says "no entries"

Clay, I tried printing the test page through JetAdmin. It says it has successfully printed, go check the output..! (But printer hardly even knows about it !!) Nothing is printed.

Further, while printing through lp command, there is just one line written in the /var/adm/lp/log file (no start/end time, no mention of reading the interface file)

Thanks again.

Re: Printer won't print !

Is the dot-matrix printer connected to an HP JetDirect External box or to a non-HP LAN box? HP's JetDirect uses a proprietary port for native JetAdmin printing. If this is a non-HP box, you'll need to delete the printer and add the printer as a remote printer. You must obtain the LAN adapter's internal name for remote printing. HP's JetDirect interfaces have two: text and raw where the text name will process the incoming job as a Unix ASCII file and add the required CR to each LF.

Re: Printer won't print !

Okay Sunil,

This one is strange since your PC's can print through the JetDirect but your UNIX box can't even directly through the JetAdmin software as a test. I assume you choose the simple text file to print. I also assume that this is an external JetDirect. Is this a multi-port JetDirect? If so, you may be trying to print through the wrong port. I would next turn the printer off (leaving the JetDirect on) and try the test page. If it still thinks it's printing you must be on the wrong port OR
the JetDirect you are talking to is not the same one that your PC's are talking to. Is it possible that the hostnames are resolving to a different IP address?

I'm just throwing out ideas at this point, Clay
