problem adding printers

We have recently changed the IP addresses of our printers and so I needed to remove them from using jet admin then re add them. The problem is jetadmin wont add them properly, its says it can ping them (which I can also do from the command prompt) but doesnt add them saying that jet admin cant see them. The ip address of the server is 194.36.95.13 and the ip address of the printers are 192.168.32.xx, would this differing network addresses make any deifference?

Re: problem adding printers

The first thing that jumps out at me is that 192.168.x.x is a private Class C address. Are you certain that the pings you are getting are coming from the printers in question? I would not at all be surprised if network address translation (NAT) is being done and your packets are not going where you think they are.

First, power off one of the printer and see if you can ping them. Next, telnet to the printers. If a firewall is in the picture make sure that port 9100 is open.

Also don't overlook the fact that this might simply be a hostname lookup problem.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: problem adding printers

Hi,

I think you maybe right but I can deffinatley ping the right address, I can telnet to this printer and I can ping it by hostname.

I am almost certain it is something networky but my networking skills are a bit lacking?

Re: problem adding printers

I get this often on my WAN printers. Since yours is on a separt segment, it may be slow response.
It seems that if the ping response is too slow ( say, over 150 ms) jetadmin / hppi wont see the printer, but if I add it anyway, it works. Although you have to supply printer model this way)
