problem in receiving mail

Hi experts,
I am facing a strange problem with "elm".
some times when i try to access elm it is making 6 attempts to receive new mail and exiting.
When i checked /var/mail there was a "sysadmin.lock" file, elm is working fine if i remove this file but the same lock file automatically getting created after some time, then disappearing after few minutes. why this is happening?.
When i use "pine" instead of elm, i am able to go inside, but receiving mail with 1-2 hrs delay, the delay is not acceptable, because it is production machine and we need to monitor periodically.
Using HP-UX 10.20 k-class server. Our mail system is NFS mounted.
Any kind of comments appreciable.
