I think you are refering to the process id.
Each process is identified by this, and this is what you would use to kill or interrupt the processes.

Hi,

Here is the definition of indvidual flag bits:

Flags (octal and additive) associated with the
process:
0 swapped;
1 in core;
2 system process;
4 locked in core (e.g., for physical
I/O);
10 being traced by another process;
20 another tracing flag;

You can look at the man page but simply...

1st field - process starting person
2nd - process id
3rd - parent process
4th - run status
5th - start date
6th - start year
7th - start time
8th - process start command

Octal additive means that each value listed is an octal value and is to be added together to define the status.

For instance-
A value of "3" would be
1 ; In core
+2 ; system process
=3
