Quantum DX5000 VTL
Just wondering if anyone (besides me) has used a Quantum VTL working with HPUX 11.11 running on an rp5470? It is connected to the server via fibre channel switch.
I can see a couple LTO drives on it, but cannot get the robotics working so it's difficult to get a virtual tape mounted.
The install guide says I can use either sctl, spt or schgr to talk to it. It talks about configuring these into the kernel if not already there, but sctl was there. I forced it to use that driver with:
ioscan -M sctl -H 0/3/0/0.2.7.255.0.0.0
It still doesn't seem to know what it is:
ctl 32 0/3/0/0.2.7.255.0.0.0 sctl UNCLAIMED UNKNOWN ATL
P7000 6438250
tape 1 0/3/0/0.2.7.255.0.0.1 stape CLAIMED DEVICE HP
Ultrium 2-SCSI
/dev/rmt/1m /dev/rmt/c28t0d1BEST
/dev/rmt/1mb /dev/rmt/c28t0d1BESTb
/dev/rmt/1mn /dev/rmt/c28t0d1BESTn
/dev/rmt/1mnb /dev/rmt/c28t0d1BESTnb
tape 2 0/3/0/0.2.7.255.0.0.2 stape CLAIMED DEVICE HP
Ultrium 2-SCSI
/dev/rmt/2m /dev/rmt/c28t0d2BEST

/dev/rmt/2mn /dev/rmt/c28t0d2BESTn
/dev/rmt/2mnb /dev/rmt/c28t0d2BESTnb
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Tim

Re: Quantum DX5000 VTL
Tim, good for you using VTl.. say... is the Robotic control independent of the VTL or (disks them self) ?
Or you using Netbackup ? then does the Master or San-Media see the VTL serials as real tapes ? if so, then it is the schgr that you should look at..
the schgr controls the robotics, right ?
good hunting..

Re: Quantum DX5000 VTL
Hi Tim
The sctl driver is for the scsi interface, stape is the scsi tape drives, the robotics requires schgr. Some older libraries may need autox0 instead of schgr.

Re: Quantum DX5000 VTL
Thanks for the replies.
Tom - Yes, the robotics is separate from the tape units themselves. Has its own hardware address. I am using DataProtector with the VTL.
I wondered about using that schgr driver, but in the kernel config (in SAM) it says series 700 next to it. I was concerned that it was for HP workstations only. Maybe I'll build that into the kernel and give it a try.
I suspect if this were an HP VTL it would all be working fine together. The Quantum is about 1/3 the price per/gb though, so hard to pass that up.
Thanks
