rcp on 10.10. problem
Hello,
I sporadically get the following message;
rcp: protocol screwup: expected control record
rcp: lost connection
when run on my 10.10 box to transfer files over to my 11.00 box. It occurs during the copy, not at the start. Somefiles will be transfered.
Anybody know what the problem is?

Re: rcp on 10.10. problem
Chris --
The "rcp: protocol screwup:" part of the message is standard for rcp although the part after that varies depending on the root error.
Its quite possible that the 1st line is simply telling us (redundantly) about the second line.
there were some issues with FDDI cards and NFS a while back related to rcp and also problems with rcp and bad lan cards or rcp and fast lan cards.
Just to get some more details:
1) What model of box are these two systems ?
2) What type of networking are you running on the two systems ?
3) Are rcping from or to an NFS file system or automounted file system ?
4) Do you have the problem going from the 10.10 box to another 11.00 box ?

Re: rcp on 10.10. problem
Thanks for your time Ken;
1) D270(10.10) pushing file to a L1000(11.00)
2) TCP/IP, same subnet, 10Mb on D270,100Mb on L1000
3) No.
4) Do you have the problem going from the 10.10 box to another 11.00 box ? Yes. The opposite way seems stable.
Each box has about only about ten patches! Suppose you could say they are 'patch left'.
Anyhow, this problem, and others, have given me a lever with management to begin a proper patch management and application policy. So last night I applied around 50 patches to the 10.10 box (still some reboot requireds to do though) and am about to bring the L1000 upto new millenium standards (not been patched since old '99!).
Therefore, this problem may have actually have gone away already, but I wont start testing until my patching has finished.
But, if you have anything more to add..
Regards
Chris
