re : replacing the root disk

Hi Guys,
Can I use ignite to replace 2 x36GB disk to 2 x 146GB harddisk on a L3000 server. I understand that the default PE allocation is 4GB, is there any impact if I don't change the PE, can the PE be change during ignite restore??? Pls advice

Regards
Vincent

Re: re : replacing the root disk

Hi Vincent,

Yes you can very well use Ignite to replace the disks and at the time of ignite restore it will ask you to create VG where you can change the parameters to what every you like.
If you dont change the PE Size, which is 4MB right now, the only problem you will have is in utilizing the disk. Through you add 146GB in the VG you still wont be able to fully utilize the capacity.
So the best way to replace the disks to 146GB is using Ignite.

Re: re : replacing the root disk

Vincent,

Can I use ignite to replace 2 x36GB disk to 2 x 146GB harddisk on a L3000 server.

Yes.. but some minor footnotes here..
First, and foremost, get the latest version of "Ignite" installed on your system. And perform an Ignite of your current system. and created a 2nd tapes (2 backups).

why 2 disks?
If 1-disk has the volume group, and it is Mirror'ed to the 2nd disk, then this breaks with the Ignite install. You will have to take care of performing the Mirror after the Ignite-install procedure.

When installing from Ignite, you might want to "increase" your size of /opt, /var, etc.. by interrupting the Ingnite install and going to Advance to change the size of the Volumes. (But, this might be an option, that you decided.)

performance: is the RPMs the same for both drives ? 10K or 15K .. I'm thinking the 146 might have a faster seek time.. anyway, I'm not certain about this PE size as related to performance. leave it be..

note: after setting up the disks, double check your "setboot" command and test the alternative boot.

my 2 cents.

Re: re : replacing the root disk

Hi Vincent,

Yes, you can use Ignite to replace the disks with the larger one. Please interupt the Ignite and modified the necessary setting once you be able to boot from Ignite/UX's backup tape.

Hope this information can help you.

Re: re : replacing the root disk

Hi,

Yes you can achive this. But default PE size for old OS versions is 4MB not 4GB. You did not mentioned which OS version is this? If it is HPUx 11i MC-OE June 2004 then default PE size is 16MB. Also it is different in various releases.

You need to change this. Without doing that you can not allocate all the space of your hard disk.

While recovering from ignite you can resize all the volumes as well. Also take a ignite backup with -I option for interactive mode recovery. Once restoration is done you need to mirror root and then require to import your other volume groups.

Also take some more time to assign points to earlier responses to your questions to improve the forum. Here are the your questions for which you still require to do that

Hi Vincent

Yes, you can use ignite to replace existing 2X 36Gb drives to 2 X 146Gb disks on your server. You might have to change PE size during recovery to utilise full new disk space.

After you have recovered vg00, rebuild the mirror and restore any file systems you have backed up.

Re: re : replacing the root disk

Mahesh FYI,

All file systems within vg00 will be restored from ignite tape itself. All other file systems belonging to other VG's do not required to be restored as this will be functional by importing & activating the vg's itself.
