Hello everyone,
I monitor about 5 HP-UX servers. I'll go daily to each of them...checking for logs...read mails... My question is: Is there a way I could read those root mails remotely with a pop3 (or IMAP) client?.
I know I can configure syslog to send me emails...but the thing is that I don't want sendmail running on the servers. So, I'm just wondering what kind of service do I need to run that will retrieve what's in /var/mail/root for me...I can't think of another thing other than a POP3 daemon...if this is the only solution..which one would you recommend? Or any better ideas to automate this?
Thanks,
Jorge

Hi Jorge,
I cannot tell you if this is possible with a POP3 or IMAP client. But why to complicate the things ?
Have a .forward file in the root's home directory with your SMTP address (official email ID).
Whenever mail is sent to root, it will be forwarded to you.
Define a rule in your email client to redirect those mails to a folder that you can refer at a later convenient time.
-- Sundar.
