Recommended array to attach to K360

Currently have a K-360 with a Model 20 array attached.
What would you suggest we add to expand disk capacity? Just another Model 20 or something else which is faster.

Thanks
Darren

Re: Recommended array to attach to K360

I guess it depends on what you can afford and what your capacity demands are. Isn't the K-360 going off support next year?

Re: Recommended array to attach to K360

Hi Harry,

Its just a test box, so not to concerned about the support.

If money wasnt a concern what would you attach?

If you had a tight budget what would you suggest?

Thanks Harry

I didnt think it was possible to attach those kind of arrays to the machine.

Is it possible to attach a SC-10 enclosure?

Re: Recommended array to attach to K360

Darren,

the SC10 uses LVD SCSI, in a K box you cannot have an LVD SCSI card. Though there are converters HVD/LVD SCSI, I would not recommend.

Instead you can go for the HVD10
which is the SC10 equivalent only HVD SCSI. However, SC10s are used much more frequently, so if you are looking for refurbished HVD10 you might have an issue in getting one.

Also these are only JBODs, not arrays. If disk perfomance is not a an issue, ok. If you can get another Model 20 cheap, why not take it.

Bernhard

Re: Recommended array to attach to K360

You can use fibre channel with K's, we do.

Re: Recommended array to attach to K360

Bernhard,

The drives in the HVD10 are faster than the Model 20 arent they 10K rpm vs 7200rpm??

Your opinion is greatly appreciated

Re: Recommended array to attach to K360

Darren,

it may be that the disks in the HVD10 are 10k rpm ones don't know; but still it is a JBOD where your disk IO performance is limited to an individual disk performance.

on the model 20 - even if you use only "2-disk-RAID1-LUNs" - the main performance gain is through the cache (64MB typically) on the array controllers.

Bernhard

Re: Recommended array to attach to K360

Darren,

FC10? yes you can attach it, but it is also a JBOD, plus you need FC card(s) and the FC disks for FC10 are quite expensive.

Re: Recommended array to attach to K360

So would you just attach another Model 20?

Which slot does it attach to? Do we need to get another card as there is already a Model 20 attached

Re: Recommended array to attach to K360

If low cost is a concern and JBOD is acceptable, look for Jamaica enclosures. You'll need HP-UX disk mirroring software to provide reliability like the model 20.

Re: Recommended array to attach to K360

Just to clear something up for myself

So if I choose the Model 20 or the HVD10 they attach to the HSC Slots?

If i choose the FC-10 I need to purchase a fibre channel card.

Money is most likely going to be the big factor in this .

Re: Recommended array to attach to K360

Darren,

for a 2nd Model 20 you *should* get another Fast Wide Diff SCSI card (preferably GSC/HSC or Precision Bus depending on available slots)

As an alternative you could daisy-chain the Model 20s, requiring you to make sure the controllers on the same bus do not have a target ID conflict.
(there are dip switches to set the ID for each controller); though this should work, I do not know if it is actually supported.

Re: Recommended array to attach to K360

Darren,

if you have a free HSC bus slot and can get an A2969A F/W SCSI interface, that would be better than

a free Precision Bus slot for a 28696A FWD SCSI-2 PB board.

Re: Recommended array to attach to K360

Hi Darren
Here we still have 2 K360 running with one on 10.20 and the other on 11.00
They both have 2 slots connected (Dual/alternate pathing) and boot on the subsystems... which are a HDS 5750 and a HDS 5800
These configurations must have been the most stable we have...

Have a look if you could find a refurbished cabinet, try and get into contact directly with HDS and see if they have one cheap...

All the best
Victor
