Remote printer Installation

Hi All,

I need some help.
I have a HP Laserjet 5P printer attached to a Windows NT machine , and currently the printer is shared to all.
I wish to send my printing from my HP visualize machine to this remote printer.
These are the steps that i did, at sam

1. sam
2. Printers and Plotters
3. LP Spooler
4. Printers and Plotters
5. Tab to Actions
6. Add Remote printer
Entered the name of the printer on the Win NT at the remote printer name and remote system name (of the Win NT machine) and any other information that was need in the screen.

Then i tried printing a text file, the file was not printed.

When i typed lpstat -u, below is the output i got:
******************
hplaserj-0 root priority 0 Oct 8 12:45 on hplaserj
samKAAa06661 192 bytes
connection to WINT is down

cisco: waiting for queue to be enabled on WINT

*********************

The WINT mentioned is the Win NT machine's name over the network.

Please help

Re: Remote printer Installation

hi,

If your printer is on the network you can add it with "Add Network Based Printers and plotters".

It will open hppi (located /opt/hpnpl/bin)

Go to option 1. and add the IP address to it. You can choose a model script from the list and it should print fine.

That is what I have been doing with my printers.

Another option you might want to try is:
with remote printers i found that lpr instead of lp seams to work. Give that a go.

I hope this helps you in some way.

Re: Remote printer Installation

Hi,

We configure our Jet Direct printers as NT printer queues and as HPUX network printer queues. That way neither the Windows users or HPUX users are dependent on the "other" service being available. We haven't seen a problem with this.

Re: Remote printer Installation

Hi All.

Thank you so very much for all the advices and ideas , as i have managed to install the remote printer as well as a network printer to all my unix machine.

This is what i did, as mentioned by some, the lpr deamon was indeed not running at the WinNT machine, so i installed the TCP/IP printing utilities at the WinNT machine to enable the lpr deamon to run, and i also downloaded the Jetdirect installer for the network printer and i managed to configure that also.

Cool, now i have a remote printer connected and also a network printer connected to each of my unix machine to ease printing .

Thanks again all.
Keep up the good work in helping all new comers like me!

regards
Joyce
