REPLACE MIRROR DRIVE

OK,

I have a K420 running 11.11. 2 internal disks. One primary root disk and one mirror. I want to replace the mirror drive because of some errors. Its not bad, I just want to replace it. Do I have to break the mirror before I remove the secondary disk? I tried to shutdown the box and remove the secondary disk with a replacement. When I booted up I got a panic. So I put the original secondary disk back in and it is OK. Do I need to break the mirror first with vgreduce?

Re: REPLACE MIRROR DRIVE

I do'nt think that you need to reduce the mirrors.
It shold not have caused panic. One thing that may cause problem is if you have not set quorum override. On primary disk and secondary disks do
mkboot -a "hpux -lq(;0)/stand/vmunix" /dev/rdsk/cxtxdx

Then replace the disk, boot.
Once botted,

vgcfgrestore /dev/rdsk/cxtxdx -n /dev/vg00
vgactivate -a y vg00
vgsync.

This should take care of everything.

Afterwards che lisfs outputs of both disks. Also try booting from alternate disk.

Re: REPLACE MIRROR DRIVE

You probably had problems because you could not get quorum for the volume group -- if I can safely assume that vg00 was correctly mirrored.

Run this command on both mirrors so that quorunm is ignored.

mkboot -a "hpux -lq (;0)/stand/vmunix" /dev/rdsk/cXtYdZ

You can certainly play it safe and lvreduce each LVOL and then vgreduce'ing the PV but it's really not necessary. Ask yourself what would you do if the disk really crashed? You have also found the reason why the internal disk bays on an old K-box should never be used. They are not hot-pluggable. The better option is to use external JBODS as the primary/alternate boot disks and preferably on separate controllers.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: REPLACE MIRROR DRIVE

I think the issue here is that you would want to go into either single user mode ( -is ) or if its a root disk, then lvm maintanence mode on bounce ( -lm ) and then do the vgcfgrestore to the new disk.
