Restore Server

I have a question. I have a 11.0 HP-UX N-class server. I ran a fbackup and copied the who host to a dds tape (the server is pretty small as it is a test box). The server did not have ignite on it so I didnt get a make recovery. We ran some tests on the box and ultimately had to install a new OS. If possible, I would like to get the server back to its original state. Can I just run a frecover on the backed up tape? Thanks for any insite you can provide. If I were to run a frecover, I would have to at least make sure the vg00 lvm's were created identical to the backup, correct?

Re: Restore Server

Hi Brent,

Installing new OS and then recovering the old one from backup is not a bullet proof method. I would suggest to go for Ignite for a dust- free recovery.

With fbackup restoration it's advised to get the system into single user mode and mount the file systems manually and then do an frecover.

Re: Restore Server

Hi Brent:

Ignite recovery tapes are the cheap, easy to make and designed for server restoration. Having said that (for the next time), about the best you can do is *selectively* restore configuration files from the 'fbackup' tape to bring your server back to its prior customized state.

Re: Restore Server

I agree, the best option is ignite. It is simple and battle tested. You can download it from the HP software site.

Re: Restore Server

I am aware of the ease of make recovery as we were actually testing a make recovery of a different host on this box. Ignite was not loaded so we thought we would try this method. Couple of follow up questions for both of you.....

1. In single user mode a frecovery will work? vg00 layout has to be identical though, correct..or can you have different lv sizes?

2. James, do you know of compiled list out there of each config file that needs to be restored...I am affraid that I would miss some
/etc/passwd
/etc/group
/etc/fstab
/etc/rc.config.d/netconf
and the list goes on and on....all of the patches and installed applications need to be restored also. (Dont put one together for me, but if you know of one that would be great)

I would like to just run the frecover in single user mode, but I really want to avoid having to reinstall the os again.

Thanks again
Brent
