And when you try to login, it says it is disabled?
Then it doesn't seem like you are on the console.
And if you were in single user mode, it wouldn't ask.

Did you do what Anshumali said about "ISL prompt"?

Re: Root Password Issue

Smaer.

Here are the steps:

>>Connect to MP and login

>>choose CM from menu,

>>choose RS--->

select correct partition name and number and type y

This will rset the partition and system will start booting again!!

Once you will see messages comming in console screen on your laptop
Press any key to stop normal booting process (called BCH menu)

>> type boot pri

Do you want to interact with ISL:(Yes/No): Y
ISL>

Type following at ISL prompt:

ISL> hpux -is
This will take you to single user mode (provided that no password request is set in single user mode )

Re: Root Password Issue

Shalom,

Sadly you may be out of options here.

It IS possible to configure a system to demand a password in single user mode.

If this has been done there is no way to gain root access to the system other than a valid console login. With a real console.

You know the password.

You need real console access to merely log in and resolve this problem.

Other long shot possibilities:
Boot the system of DVD/CD install media, go into recovery mode and attempt to empty out the password entry and locking information for root in /etc/passwd.

Call HP hardware support and have them come either on a fee for service basis (be prepared to spend $1,000) or under a hardware contract to come out with the proper console and cables to do this job.

This situation has festered for a number of days. The situation involving this server is clearly disorganized. I know for a fact that if you actually know the root password, a simple keyboard/monitor or console based login will reset it and re-enable it.

I have two HP-9000 servers in my home. They used to be Internet exposed in Chicago and script kiddies disabled the password many time. A simple console login fixed it every time.

Your thread is long and rich in possible solutions. I don't think anything new and innovative is going to come up here. Asking for more suggestions is not going to solve the problem.

Spending the time and resources and possibly money to implement one of the suggestions above is the way to resolve this.
