rp7420 and Veritas volume manager
I have problem with my server rp7420 with 2 cells and two virtual partition. I have volumens created with veritas volumen manager on hpux11.11. This manage multipath on my san.
Because i have problems with tranfers rates, i decide only use one path and the transferes rates to my hitachi 9585b were between 150 to 180MB/s, the result is the same if i use any path, but when i use two paths the transferes rates are between 20 to 30MB/s on every path and the total rate is between 50MB/s or 60MB/s.
Somebody can helpme with this?
Is this a problema on veritas or maybe i need change some on the kernel?
Please help
Thanks.

Re: rp7420 and Veritas volume manager
I think you should check the fcmsutil settings of the fiber channel interface.
You should also have the SAN itself checked to see if there are errors.
A hardware check with mstm/csmt/xstm on the fiber channel interfaces seems also called for.
I doubt this is a problem with VxVM or the kernel but:
kmtune | grep inode
Post it.
vx_ninode should be 90% of ninode and not zero.

Re: rp7420 and Veritas volume manager
run fcmsutil against Fibre cards and see the settings also check card status, errors etc...
fcmsutil /dev/td0 status
Try to reset Fibre card and it may help sometimes.
fcmsutil /dev/td0 reset
Are you using Veritas Dump admin utility to manage Multipathing or some other product?
Thanks,
Srini

Re: rp7420 and Veritas volume manager
Is your SAN box have Active active controllers?.Or it is active /passive?
I read in one of veritas document that if the controller is active/passive it will slowdown the performance if you configure load balancing on that.

Re: rp7420 and Veritas volume manager
First, how do you measure throughput/transfer rates to your array?
Secondly, can you clarify "but when i use two paths" ? How are you using your 2 Paths? When using "2 paths" are you certain that the "mode" of the LUNs on your Hitachi array are set for proper dual/multi-path operation as it interacts with VxVM's DMP?
And finally, do you know and have full understanding of VxVM and DMP? Are you even licensed for DMP operation with VxVM?

Re: rp7420 and Veritas volume manager
Very interesting story.
Install the latest vxvm patchset for HP-UX 11.11. (itrc.hp.com / patches / patchset)
And when that doesnt help, open a call with HP support. ;)
I would like to see the above behaviour explained. ;)
Greetz,
Chris
PS. David, meant he used the command vxdmpadm(1M), to disable 1 path.
