sam doesn't start on Web Console
I'm trying to run sam on the web console and it keeps complaining that the display cannot be opened.
The variable $DISPLAY is unset
I tried setting TERM variable to hp, hp2392, hp2392A and hp2392a without success.
The exact error message is:
"sam: Couldn't bring up the initial window, This may occur when you specify an incorrect display"
Any idea would be appreciated.
Thanks
Dan

Re: sam doesn't start on Web Console
I had several issues with webconsole when using IE, so I switched to Netscape.
What is the message if you set a DISPLAY address?

Re: sam doesn't start on Web Console
When setting the DISPLAY variable to the name of the PC I'm working from, sam will start in GUI mode, providing I've started Exceed, of course.
But this isn't really the purpose of a web console....

Re: sam doesn't start on Web Console
PROBLEM
When booting the L-class server from the Core/Install CD with the Secure Web
Console set to vt100 emulation, the first screen displayed is garbled and
unreadable. If the web console screen emulation is set to HP terminal, the first
screen is clear and options may be selected. However, when the OK option is
selected, the screen displays the following error:
Couldn't bring up initial window
you specify(specified) an incorrect display
itool: Awin-E-ScreenSize:asking for screen size failed
the user interface failed, would you like to restart it?([Y]/N)
If the Y option is selected, the same error appears. If
the N option is taken, the system reboots from the hard drive.
CONFIGURATION
HP-UX 10.20 or 11.0 HP9000 L-class servers Core OS CD
RESOLUTION
When connecting an HP Secure Web Console, HP Product J3591A, to an HP9000
L-class server, make sure the VT100 terminal emulation mode is selected.
Also check the terminal emulation mode of the serial port on the L-class
Guardian Service Processor (GSP).
To access the GSP from the system console, type CNTL-B
After logging in at the GSP prompt (press ENTER at the login and password
prompts if no password has been set) type the CA command at the prompt:
GSP> CA
Make sure the following settings are selected:
Serial Port baud rate: 9600
Flow Control: Software
Terminal type: VT100
Changing the terminal type from HPTERM to VT100 fixes the above problem.
To return to the hp-ux system prompt, Enter CO at the GSP> prompt:
GSP> CO

Re: sam doesn't start on Web Console
The problem we are facing here isn't related to the boot issue.
GSP emulation is properly configured as described in the document you're referencing.
In fact, I was busy verifying that point when I got the notification email for your reply :-)
The funny thing is that, when set to VT100 emulation, sam works OK but the display repeats the last line when used as a 'dumb' terminal; for example displaying the result of 'll' if it reaches the last line on screen.
As I've made a few searches on the ITRC web, I realised that I wasn't the only one facing that issue. I'll most probably open a call...
Thanks for your help.

Re: sam doesn't start on Web Console
perhaps you can try "stty" command to change the attributes of the terminal to correct the one-line-scroll problem.set the TERM = vt100.
thinphony.

Re: sam doesn't start on Web Console
This is a known problem with web console, L-class and N-class servers and HP-UX 11.0. HP suggest upgrade firmware of the web console to version 1.9, but this not solve the problem always.
The same problem is with vi editor.
The TERM setting should be VT100. When the problems appear you should close the web console and the browser and start it again. This action helps for some time.
I thing that HP is on the move.

Re: sam doesn't start on Web Console
Firmware is already at the latest rev level(1.9).
As I said, the 2 emulations work differently.
HP emulmation is OK as long as you don't start a program enquiring about the screen size.
VT100 has that rather annoying 'last line duplication' issue, but works with sam, vi...

Re: sam doesn't start on Web Console
I didn't mention it but I tried Netscape 6 and it didn't work any better :-((
Thanks for having tried anyway.

Re: sam doesn't start on Web Console
again, well done for your new hat...
I have my ie4 with webconsole set to vt100 and it seems to work, well for sam anyway, Im trying to find out why in normal usage (in vt100) I have trouble with the last line when displayed...
Best regards
Victor

Re: sam doesn't start on Web Console
Thanks for your congrats. Glad to join the team.
It's good to know that I'm not the only one having this 'last line' issue. I started wondering what I could have done wrong...
Best regards,
Dan
