Re: samba configuration
1. Edit /etc/rc.config.d/samba to enable auto-start at boot.
2. Make sure :
/etc/services:
swat 901/tcp # SAMBA Web-based Admin Tool
/etc/inetd.conf:
swat stream tcp nowait.400 root /opt/samba/bin/swat swat
Add if not there and HUP (kill -HUP PID_of_Inetd)
3. Via a web browser - connect to http://hpserver_running_samba:901 (use root/pass)
SWAT will give you the best window to learn and configure Samba.

Re: samba configuration
On HP-UX - definately use HP's CIF's server.
If you are integrating with Active Directory, have a read through my post:

Re: samba configuration
Samba-3 By Example (John Terpstra)
This book has step-by-step instructions for multiple configurations, available from Amazon. A good companion is:
The Official Samba-3 Howto and Reference Guide (John Terpstra)
This is the most comprehensive Samba publication, also on Amazon.
Both books apply to HP CIFS Server, but you should also have the HP CIFS Server Admin Guide and Release Notes, especially for installation. Do not use whatever version your system was delivered with. Go to software.hp.com and download the latest version. To install the latest, you may also need to download and install the LDAP-UX Client, and Kerberos client. It's easy and free.

Re: samba configuration
http://software.hp.com
Note some points to pay attention to. If you have a Windows PDC you can join this domain but you must have both the samba client and the samba server installed, even if you do not intend to serve.
The net join command is used to join a domain but requires the PDC administrative password to proceed.
security=domain must be activated in smb.conf to join either an LDAP managed domain or an ADS domain.
