Re: SAN setup

Franky,
HBA(Host bus Adapters) is a kind of network
cards which makes hosts(unix-W2k-etc) to
your Enterprise Virtualization Array(EVA)
storage...
Probably,you have also SAN switche(s)...
so with this plugged cards from your host(s) to these switches you can use your storage(EVA)

For example from one of my production server named newhr (oracle9i) have 2 HBA..these are Fibre channel cards and 2Gb/sec...Also i have Eva5000 with 2 controllers and 2 SAN switches...
Let me continue from my real system newhr;

newhr:/#ioscan -fnCdisk
Class I H/W Path Driver S/W State H/W Type Description
==========================================================================
disk 0 0/0/1/1.2.0 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE FUJITSU MAJ3182MC
/dev/dsk/c1t2d0 /dev/rdsk/c1t2d0
disk 1 0/0/2/0.2.0 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE SEAGATE ST318203LC
/dev/dsk/c2t2d0 /dev/rdsk/c2t2d0
disk 2 0/0/2/1.2.0 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE HP DVD-ROM 305
/dev/dsk/c3t2d0 /dev/rdsk/c3t2d0
disk 3 0/9/0/1.0.0.0 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE I2O RAID5
/dev/dsk/c4t0d0 /dev/rdsk/c4t0d0
disk 4 255/255/0/0.1 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE HSV110 (C)COMPAQ
/dev/dsk/c15t0d1 /dev/rdsk/c15t0d1

Once upon a time i have created 200Gb LUN from MA and present it to newhr(as above)
so my oracle uses this LUN....

#newhr:/#spmgr display
Server: newhr Report Created: Thu, Sep 01 16:10:45 2005
Command: spmgr display
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Storage: 5000-1FE1-5000-F2D0

Devices: c15t0d1

Controller Path_Instance HBA Preferred? Path_Status
P5849D4AAOP037 no
c14t0d1 td0 YES Active
c12t0d1 td1 YES Active

As you seen Devices: c15t0d1 is 200GB which
i have created from MA...
Do you see also the addresses like c13t0d1, c11t0d1,c14t0d1,c12t0d1
What do they mean????these are the addresses
over from my controllers and this is normal...
if one of my controller fails then again i can able to run my oracle automatically because this another controller automatically
switches the address and i can keep my working...So you have always to monitor this
status ACTIVE & STANDBY..you have to check this redundacy

Re: SAN setup

Ok Rainer,

Thanks for your quick reply.
Now, I'm now where I am up to. I'll instruct the local IT responsable for contacting the HPCE again to install the dedicated host with Command View.

I'll guess this issue comes to an end. I'll leave it open for some more days. Maybe some of you have something to add.

Regards,
Franky

NB : Thanks a lot. If any of you have problems with the Ingres DBMS I'll be happy to contribute in a similar way.

Re: SAN setup

Hi Cem,

Thanks for your last inputs.
As soon as I have the SAN configured properly, I'll check out your remarks on it.

Re: SAN setup

Franky I don't wish to harp on about this (but I will).

Your management appliance (MA) which you have the IP address for has commandviewEVA installed on it, otherwise you wouldn't have a LUN presented to your host.

Please get a terminal services session on your MA and in our case we connect to http://localhost/ (this may vary I think) which then starts the gui from there go to Devices
then commandviewEVA

I expect your HPCE can talk you through this if they set up the original LUN. You can also use that LUN as a template to give you a clue how to create the LUNs of the size that you require.

You already have a host set up although you may need to setup another one for which you will need the World Wide Node Name of the fibre cards (HBAs) in those hosts.

You then allocate VDISKs (from a disk group which looks like it is already setup) to those hosts.

Please let us know how you get on.

Re: SAN setup

Rainer is correct...You can not present this
LUN from SAM...this concept is for Command View EVA..
Also When you create LUN from EVA and present
it to your host and if your host is AIX or HP
,especially HP does not recommend creating Volume Groups from SAM,just do it from command prompt
:-((

Now;if you want to create VG for this LUN
we may go on...

Oooops. I missed this!

This appliance WILL have Command View installed on it.

Re: SAN setup

Rainer, do you know if there is a port number that commandview eva normally runs on the SAN management appliance?

If so then Franky could connect direct to that port perhaps?

Re: SAN setup

Rainer,

You are right. My local IT person is puzzling me too.
He confirms me that the HPCE has not left a dedicated PC for configuring the EVA any further, yet the local IT person gave me the ip-address. I already contacted him for further inputs.

Re: SAN setup

You can point your WEB browser to

https://:2381/command_view_eva

you will be asked for a password which you must know of course.

Using a browser to manage your EVA through the management applicance is the referred way .

Rainer

I think we're getting there.

Re: SAN setup

The management appliance isn't very big, in our case it is at the top of the EVA controller rack and labelled as the management appliance. This is the dedicated PC that has commandview on it.

There is a choice between having this setup or any other server with commandview on it. I'm pretty sure that you have a management appliance setup.

It is from the management appliance that you will be able to create VDISK/LUNs and present them to any other host connected to the SAN (once you've created an entry for that host).

Re: SAN setup

In the meantime some more info on the situation.

The local IT person had assigned an IP-address for the SAN MA before HP came over with the SAN .

Somehow, HP did not push to purchase the dedicated server with fibre-channel connection to the SAN.

So, we have an EVA without a SAN MA available.

We'll have to check our options now with the local HPCE.

Franky

Re: SAN setup

I don't understand how you have a LUN presented from the EVA to the host?

Surely commandview must be installed to be able to create this LUN?

Or SSSU.exe?

Hi Gavin,

I only have the two unix boxes to look for.

Re: SAN setup

Perhaps you can ask your HPCE if they created the LUN and if so how?

You might also want to do:
swlist -l product | grep -i command
on those UNIX boxes which I think will pick up whether commandview is installed on them.

or find / -name sssu

to see if sssu is on either of them.

Re: SAN setup

Gavin,

That's it. HPCE created the LUN before the delivery.

This is the output asked :

Re: SAN setup

Oh, and I guess that they had an MA at that time?

You need to get commandview eva, sorry. Go back twenty pages.

You don't need an MA as you can install command view eva on another server, possibly on a unix box (I haven't done this though), although it may make life simpler to get an MA.

Re: SAN setup

Command View EVA (CV-EVA) is not available for Unix hosts, sorry.

You need a Windows 2000 or 2003 server with at least one supported Fibre Channel adapter (HBA) and the ProLiant system management environment, because CV-EVA depends on some of its components.

You can run SSSU (Storage System Scripting Utility) on HP-UX or another supported operating system, but it talks to the CV-EVA agent via TCP/IP.

Re: SAN setup

because i am puzzled...i have never seen
before Path_Status like;
Active-Available-Standby at the same time

Does it depend on eva3k controllers?
maybe still not cabled???

the status active-availabe-standy is quite normal, if you have your host connected to the SAN switch with two HBA's

Re: SAN setup

Indeed that's easy to explain:

- the server has two Fibre Channel adapters
- both adapters and all EVA ports are in the same fabric

> P66C5E3AARK074 no
> c16t0d2 td0 no Active
> c13t0d2 td1 no Available
> c9t0d2 td0 no Available
> c20t0d2 td1 no Available

Adapter "td0" has access to both ports of controller with serial number "P66C5E3AARK074" via 'c16t0d2' + 'c9t0d2'. Adapter "td1" uses 'c13t0d2' + 'c20t0d2'. This controller is owning the virtual disk behind this devices, because at least one path is marked 'Active'. Only one path is 'Active', because load balancing is disabled.

Scrolling up....
> Load Balance: Off Auto-restore: Off

Right ;-)

> P66C5E3AARK06P no
> c11t0d2 td0 no Standby
> c18t0d2 td0 no Standby
> c14t0d2 td1 no Standby
> c21t0d2 td1 no Standby

Same game, except that this is the other controller, which does not own the virtual disk. It needs to present the virtual disk so that Secure Path knows it can possible fail over to any of these paths. They're marked as 'Standby', because the EVA3000 is described as an 'Active/Passive' storage array - you can only do I/O through the controller which 'owns' the virtual disk.

Re: SAN setup

Oh, by the way - it would be nice if you could attach the output of these commands as a small .TXT file to your replies. That will keep the original formatting and makes the reading & understanding much easier
(at least to me ;-)

Thanks!
