saving root disk

saving root disk

It looks like I have corrupted my root disk. I was running an insf -e when my system locked up. It now panics with an lvm error looking for drivers. The drive is 11i based and of course I don't have it backed up. :-(

Is there a way I can mount the drive and make the necessary repairs.

Thanks for any help.

Re: saving root disk

Hi Dave,

You should be able to boot into single user mode and recreate the drivers.

boot sequence
boot pri
interact with IPL> Y
hpux -is

mount /usr
insf -e

reboot

#hope this helps

Re: saving root disk

Hi Dave,

Try to reboot the system in single user mode and then if that works boot it in multiuser mode.

Here is a thread on how you can boot your system in single user mode,

http://us-support.external.hp.com/cki/bin/doc.pl/sid=f083da9914612b6ffb/screen=ckiDisplayDocument?docId=200000057790847

Hope this helps.

Re: saving root disk

I get the same error is single user mode.
Any other ideas. Is it possible to mount my boot drive off an external drive?

Re: saving root disk

Dave,

Can you post the messages from the panic??

That might help.

Re: saving root disk

Why not try LVM maintenance mode - this doesn't use LVM at all...

just do the same as for single user mode, but try 'hpux -lm' instead of 'hpux -is'

Of course you can only mount root in this situation - I'm not at a machine now, so I can't remember whether insf is in /sbin

Re: saving root disk

no luck with the hpux -lm . It still panics
with " The device file /dev/rroot does not exist.

In the old days I use to be able to boot of another drive and mount the corrupt drive to restore any files. I have tried to mount the drive via SAM but it warns me that it will stomp all over the existing filesystem.

Thanks for any and all help.

Re: saving root disk

looks like there's a problem with /dev/

boot from a support cd, mount your root disk from the memory based os, then try to figure out what is wrong.

It works for me (tm)

Re: saving root disk

Any ideas on how I obtain a support CD?

Thanks,

Log a hardware call, then mug the engineer who arrives to fix it :)

Seriously, you should have received one with your system when it was delivered (it'll be in the big flat box). I think the support functionality may be on the Core OS/Install disk for 11i. Unfortunately I can't check this since our nearest 11i machine is 200 miles away.
In time, on budget, good quality. Pick any two.

Re: saving root disk

I checked the 11i install CD and it was not obvious to me what I need to look for.
I did a lifls -l and it came back with:
ISL AUTO CONFIG INDEX HPUX INSTALL INSTALLFS
INSTALLFS VINSTALLFS WINSTALLFS VINSTALL WINSTALL INSTCMDS RECCMDS SYSCMNDS SCRIPTS
