SCSI Problem

I am trying to install two C6393A (HP SMART Rack Mount Disks) in a C4317A (HP SMART Storage Enclosure)... however, the SCSI disks themselves are the Seagate Cheeta ST318203LC. So instead of 9GB standard on each disk, I have 18GB. I am trying to get this to work on a D250 or D350 with HP-UX 11.00... the system hangs every time I hook it up, even without power supplied to the disks.

Re: SCSI Problem

Hi Lorie,

IIRC, those enclosures have SCSI ID setups per slot, so make sure the drives themselves are set to SCSI ID 0 & then set the slot IDs to unique values that do not conflict with anything else on the bus.

Re: SCSI Problem

Yes, I have connected a tape drive (twice) using SCSI ID 3 and then 4... just to make sure the SCSI card in the D250 and D350 was working. No problems. It found the tape drive both times. I do the same with the disk drives and nothing. Is there possibly a compatability issue?

Re: SCSI Problem

As always - it depends.

What type SCSI HBA is this hanging on? That drive is an SE/LVD (auto-detecting) style & if the HBA is an HVD - it won't work. Other thing is that the drive cannot self-terminate the bus nor even supply term power. So make sure you terminate the bus on the enclosure properly & use on active terminator.

Re: SCSI Problem

My best guess is that you are trying to use SE-SCSI disk modules in conjunction with a FWD SCSI controller. The Smart Enclosure accepts a variety of modules. Some are SE-SCSI, some are LVD SCSI, and still others are LVD SCSI. However, all must be compatible. You cannot mix HVD SCSI devices with anything else on the same bus --- not even terminators. What tape drive works and with what controller in your D-box?
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: SCSI Problem

I think you are right... the tape drive is a C6374A (DLT7000).

Re: SCSI Problem

This is the SCSI HBA I am trying to connect this to...

GSC add-on Fast/Wide SCSI Interface

So according to the information supplied... this will not work.

Re: SCSI Problem

This DLT7000 drive is a HVD/FWD SCSI device. Your disk drives are absolutely incompatible with this architecture; mixing these is a very good way to damage equipment. You could connect these to the SE-SCSI external connector BUT make absolutely certain that you find a suitable SE-SCSI terminator.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.
