Re: Send mail
You have to configure sendmail or any other Mail transfr agent to send message/mails. You have to identify the smart relay host which can relay the mails to other external/internal domains.
edit the /etc/mail/sendmail.cf and put the name of the smart relay host after the DS parameter. it should look like
DSsmartrelayhost.domain.com
don't forget to put the entry in /etc/hosts
IP_address smartrelayhost.domain.com
restart the sendmail service.
/sbin/init.d/sendmail stop
/sbin/init.d/sendmail start
Regards,
Naveej

Re: Send mail
If yes, you just need your HP m/c to resolve the name of mail exchanger (either through /etc/resolv.conf or /etc/hosts).
Once sure that the machine is able to resolve the name, just give mailx command,
# mailx -s Test email.id@yourdomain.com < Test_mail

Re: Send mail
If you are to use SMS you need to configure some vendor tools like TElAlert

Re: Send mail
I had a same sort of problem. When I mailed as root from the server srv40.hoorn.nl (root@srv40.hoorn.nl), the smart relay host did not accept the mail, because the domain srv40.hoorn.nl is not hoorn.nl.
In the mailx command I added the "-r" option (return address) like "someone@hoorn.nl" and it went fine!
Hope it helps,
Renarios
