sendmail question

Greetings all,

I am new to sendmail and have only just started playing around with it. I am currently looking at the version of sendmail on my server (running 11.0) and i am not sure what i am seeing. See below:

#sendmail -bs < /dev/null
220 hostname.com ESMTP Sendmail 8.9.3 (PHNE_18546)/8.7.1; Tue, 3 Sep 2002 14:37:45 +1000 (EST)

#what /usr/sbin/sendmail | grep version
version.c 8.9.3.1 (Berkeley) 2/9/1999 (PHNE_18546)

#grep ^DZ /etc/mail/sendmail.cf
DZ8.7.1

Am I running 8.7.1 or 8.9.3?

Where is the version kept that is actually used? I mean in the /etc/mail/sendmail.cf file it says 8.7.1 however i can also see that the "version.c" is using 8.9.3.1. So what am i really using?

Oh and how does it know where to go to use the correct information?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards
Maria

Re: sendmail question

Hi,
your version is Sendmail 8.9.3.
Start your sendmail.
#sendmail -bd
#telnet 127.0.0.1 25
now it will connect and you can see the version properly.

Re: sendmail question

Hi

thanks for your response, but i still want to know why it is showing me 2 different versions.

I would like to understand what it is doing and why they aren't the same version like on my other system.

Re: sendmail question

Hi,
It is because the sendmail version 8.9.3 you are using is upgraded by applying patches to 8.7.1 source code probably by HP.
