Sendmail question

Can anyone please tell me what this means and what I should do with it

501 Syntax error in parameters scanning "FROM"

501 Data format error
553 Unbalanced '<'
553 Unbalanced '>'
550 COM>... User unknown
553 Unbalanced '<'
553 Unbalanced '>'
553 Unbalanced '<'

It means a smtp command was issued to your sendmail daemon that did not follow the esoteric syntax guidelines.

If this server is exposed to the internet some kiddie might by trying to relay spam off your box.

If not, you may have a bad smtp script.

You had a badly formatted message sent to your mail server. Looks like from a bad script, possibly for spam..the unbalanced lines look like this messages was really hosed..
Not a problem on your side, but I would monitor the server to see if you get more of these errors.
