Set up Samba

I would like to set up Samba in order to allow PC users to Map Unix file system to local PC drive. It will allow everybody to map the drive without checking the security. Thank you for the helps.

Re: Set up Samba

The application CD provided comes with samba. It is called CIFS. It is quite easy to set up and administer.

Re: Set up Samba

Hi,

Configuring Samba isn't hard. There are some good documents available
to help you. I would think a bit about setting up the share without any
security. Besides the security risk, you may also find that when anyone can
map to a share, they will, and they will use it as storage space for all
kinds of junk.

Here is a link to the guide for the CIFS/9000 software:

Here is the link to Samba. You can get all the docs from their
web pages:

Re: Set up Samba

Recently investigate an ASU/9000 to CIFS/9000 migration, aka SAMBA, and found some interesting and cheap online HP SAMBA courses:

H4265AAE Sharing Resources with Samba: available anytime $99.00

H3550I UNIX/NT Integration - $129.00

Also found some great procedural documents with scripts at the www.software.hp.com website:

asu/9000 to cifs/9000
cifs/9000 client
cifs/9000 server 2.2d
cifs/9000 server technology preview

http://www.software.hp.com/cgi-bin/swdepot_parser.cgi/cgi/displayProducts.pl?group_type=search&group_name=cifs&search_free=1&search_trial=1&search_buy=1

Alot of SAMBA users go HP-UX or LINUX on IBM but HP also supports it and has a lot of old ASU customers out there. (* ASU was the precursor to SAMBA. *)

See a lot of forum question about SSH and SAMBA or PAM and SAMBA or other security upgrades. And a lot of problems with passwords or usernames greater than 8 chars. Here's one:

Re: Set up Samba

samba comes pretty much ready to go. I've included my smb.conf file which authorizes access to the /home and /tmp filesystems.

Then its just like the docs say, smbpasswd to set up for access.
