Setting the Term

we have a j282 sitting around so I decided to put it to use. I reset the root password and was able to log in, but every time I try to log in it tells me that the TERM=unknown. It also won't let me into vi to edit any commands. It also wont log in to CDE.

How do I set the term? The monitor (no console?) is an A1097C (one of those huge color monitors with a RGB connector)

Re: Setting the Term

Hi Edward:

THe answer to the general question is from the shell prompt: export TERM=xxxx

e.g. export TERM=vt100
That will them let you use vi. Unfortunately, I don't know it there is a usable terminfo entry for this device. You can look under /usr/lib/terminfo for possible choices.
All of the HP oentries are under /usr/lib/terminfo/H and /usr/lib/terminfo/h
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Setting the Term

I won't pretend to be an expert on this, but have you tried hp termtype? vt100?

# export TERM=hp

Just a shot in the dark. Good luck.

Re: Setting the Term

Can you log in? If so:

export TERM=vt100

vt100 is pretty generic and might work. Could not find and entry for 1097 in /etc/termcap here.

Re: Setting the Term

Hi Edward,

If you can log in and i guess you can since you changed the root passwd.
# export TERM=vt100

# echo "export TERM=vt100">>$HOME/.profile
#. ./.profile
or any other terminal type for that matter.
To be able to start CDE you should configure networking first.

hope this will help.

Re: Setting the Term

Thank you all for your prompt responses.

First I tried:

# export TERM=vt100

I didn't get an error message and it let me get into vi, but it didn't clear the screen or once I got out of vi, to use the "clear" command. So I ended up with a ton of characters all over the screen. After repeatedly hitting return I was able to get to a point that I could actually see what I was typing. So I tried:

# export TERM=hp

That worked. I was able to get into vi (and actually see what I was typing) and edit all the stuff I need to.

Thank you all once again.
