The one of the best solution if you have corupted boot devices is having Ignite backup of the system.

If your vmunix corrupted or missing, using
the installation CD, you can go the recovery shell and copy the vmunix from the cd. And once the server is able to boot from the disk, you can restore your
file using the backup

Addition to above:
Also you can recover some files like
/etc/passwd,/etc/group,/etc/inittab..etc..,
by mounting the root filesystem.
Also if by chance your /usr or /var is full and after your all tries you are not able to bring the system up in single user also then
you could mount these filesystems and trim them. ( i never did this )
