Sharp printer install on 10.20
Hi all,
I'm having a problem installing a Sharp printer/copier/faxer on my server running HP-UX 10.20. It is going to be a "network printer" but, obviously I cannot use jetadmin. Any suggestions??
Your help is much appreciated,
Chet

Re: Sharp printer install on 10.20
It's an unfortunate choice of terms in SAM. Network printer means: HP JetDirect hardware and software. Remote printer means: send the job to an lpd/rlp-compatible system like NT or
another HP-UX system.
To make things really complicated, a lot of printers have a network interface that supports port 515 (lpd/rlp service) and can look like a remote print server. However, you need to obtain the internal name of the printer as it is known to the network card.
If this was a computer-based print server, the server may have more than one printer attached, so the name of the printer as known to the server must be known. For hardware-based network print servers, this could be a simple name like prn or text or raw.
So to add a remote printer, use SAM, give the local queue a name, enter the name or IP address of the printer card, and then the internal name of the printer. Be sure to check the BSD option.
Note that the printer expects the data to be pre-formatted, something that HP-UX remote printing does not perform. Simple ASCII files require a CR added to each LF. You can use ux2dos to perform this translation.

Re: Sharp printer install on 10.20
Hi,
Simply understand HP-UX have 3 kinds of printers.
1. Local Printer - Serial or Parallel attach to the server.
2. Remote Printer - Printer atttach to another server or non-jet direct network printer.
I mean printer from other vendor have to consider remote printer for HP-UX not network printer.
This case you have to configure this Sharp printer as remote printer by checking the manual of the vendor. No need jetadmin.
3. Network Printer , use when we want to print to HP network printer with jet direct internal or external box.
-----------------------
if the vendor doesn't have installation instruction for UNIX , just enable TCP/IP printing service to one of NT that can print to the printer.
Then add remote printer in HP-UX point to NT.
Hope this help,
