single user question

Maybe i going to do silly question.

Can i make a boot tape and boot from it and work in single user?

I mean interact with ISL and use de hpux -is

"boot tape" is not equal to "boot disk", boot tape can be used to boot the server, it will recover all info backed up from vg00 to the root disk(if we only backed up vg00 before), then the server will self boot after the recovery. Of course, at this moment, we can break the boot sequence and use "hpux -is" to go to single user mode.

A boot tape is somewhat special. Of course the HP-UX kernel accepts the -is option and passes the required run (e.g. "s" for single user) to /sbin/init.

But normally the HP-UX boot tapes are created using Ignite/UX... in this case a generic INSTALL kernel is booted from tape. This kernel loads and mounts an INSTALFS (also from tape) to a RAM disk and finally starts a *special* Ignite version of /sbin/init from this RAM disk. This /sbin/init ignores the runlevel information... so it's not possible to boot from an Ignite boot tape to single user mode. You always get into the Ignite UI.

However, after booting from such tape you are able to exit to a recovery shell... which may be OK for you (depends on what you are planning to do from single user mode).
