slow SAM startup

I'm building a new server on an L2000 box with HP-UX 11.0. When I start the SAM utility, it takes upwards of 2-3 minutes to display the first screen (Press return to continue...). It then initializes for about another minute before any of the menu items are displayed and accessable. This server is not attached to the network and is totally quiet. It has oodles of available memory. What could be causing SAM to load so slowly?

Re: slow SAM startup

It should not take onre than a minute normally .While loading it does a system scanning .

You may probably check the syslog and ioscan -fn out put and see for anything abnormal .

If you have many devices present in NO_HW state in ioscan o/p (devices which are removed from the system and not claned up ),you can remove it by rmsf.

Re: slow SAM startup

Hi,

check your /etc/hosts file

127.0.0.1 myhost
127.0.0.1 localhost loopback

Re: slow SAM startup

I would check your host files for a 127.0.0.1 entry. Also if you have setup an hostname and ip address nake sure that is also included in /etc/hosts. Also check if you have a /etc/resolv.conf file. If you have and the server is not connected to the network, it SAM will still try to resolve its hostmane and IP address from via DNS which will eventually timeout hence the delay.

Re: slow SAM startup

looks like your loopback is not configurred properly, have a look at /etc/hosts.

Re: slow SAM startup

Is there any process occupying system resource ? check with top / vmstat informations.

What is the resolvation method in /etc/nsswitch.conf for hosts: entry. Is it like files dns and what is in /etc/hosts file.

check the resolvation time with nsquery / nslookup for localhost and hostname.
