SNMP community string

I am only receiving SNMP traps into my NNM collection station. Is it necessary to specify a community string in the network device(sending the trap). I have configured it to only send traps to the NNM station.
I thought community strings are only required in case of polling. I may be getting confused.

If your strings are different, you may have a problem. If you are using the defaults, you are bound to have a problem at some point. (Since everyone would be able to get it.)
