SSH virtualization on low end hardware

We're looking to add a low end Itanium machine to our department and I was looking at the Integrity RX2800. The idea would be to run HPUX 11.31 on the machine. The only thing we need to do with the box is test SSH software, take it in and out of trusted mode, and allow telnet connections.

Q1. With the HP virtualization options can I have multiple 11.31 OS instances each with their own SSH/telnet daemon on the same physical machine.

Q2. Will a basic RX2800 will be enough for this, considering that none of the virtual instances will be doing any "real" work? Other than accepting inbound connections for testing.

I'm somewhat familiar with how Solaris does it where I can have multiple zones, each their own IP address and daemons. Wondering if this is similar in HP-UX land?

Thanks,
Gary

Re: SSH virtualization on low end hardware

If you are looking for the solaris zones equivalent, I think they are called "HP VMs" which is a licensed product if I am not mistaken.

Re: SSH virtualization on low end hardware

Shalom,

1. HPVM is the only option for this hardware. vpar/npar requires a cell based system, which this is not.

2. Yes. Make sure you have a generous amount of memory.

Re: SSH virtualization on low end hardware

it will work great if it has enough meemory. I had a rx2600 with 8 GB of memory could create 2 VMs on it with 2 GB each.

Re: SSH virtualization on low end hardware

Since you have up to 8 CPU cores the only limit you can hit is the amount of memory. Each virtual machine needs a certain amount and the host system needs memory too. But if you have enough RAM, you can create a certain number of virtual machines on your rx2800i2.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.
