swinstall errors/mirrordisk/disk striping

Hi all,
I'm building a new server and am having 3 issues - the first is I'm having problems with swinstall - I'm receiving a "don't have permissons, check swacl" errors. I'm logged in as root. Second and third issues are really questions about installing and configuring the mirrordisk-ux software and any help on how to stripe the disks as well. OS is 11.0

Thanks much,
Chet

Re: swinstall errors/mirrordisk/disk striping

Chet,

I have seen that ACL error b/4. Try killing and respawning swagentd and see if that clears up your swinstall error, then ask your MirrorUX questions.

Thanks Ross - it was as simple as killing swagentd. I appreciate it.

Re: swinstall errors/mirrordisk/disk striping

If you want to mirror AND stripe disks, then your only option is to utility the '-D' option in lvcreate to create distributed, or extent-based, stripes of your disks.

You have to use PVG (physical volume groups) to do this and your stripe size is the same as the PE size that your VG was created with.

Let's say you have 6 disks:

Your /etc/lvmpvg file should look like:

# cat /etc/lvmpvg
VG /dev/vg01
PVG group1
/dev/dsk/c1t1d0
/dev/dsk/c1t2d0
/dev/dsk/c1t3d0
PVG group2
/dev/dsk/c2t1d0
/dev/dsk/c2t2d0
/dev/dsk/c2t3d0

This file can just be created via vi if you have already created your volume group.

Now if you want a 1 GB LVOL created striped and mirrored across those disks you would do:

# lvcreate -L 1024 -m 1 -D y -s g -n mylvol /dev/vg01

If you want more information on the '-D' option read thru the lvcreate man page.

Re: swinstall errors/mirrordisk/disk striping

For the swinstall errors, you can always try restarting the daemon by:

# swagentd -r

For installing and configuring Mirror-UX question, it is simple:
1) Purchase the product from HP (you will get the licenses and codewords).
2) Mount the application CD, add new code word.
3) Select Mirror/UX software and install it.
4) Check 'swlist' output and see it lists the software.

No other configuration needed. The setup only needed when you actually mirror the disks. For striping disks, follow this recent discussion in forums:
