syslog/udp unknown service

Hi
I get the above error message on console og 11.11 machine and cant telnet/rsh to host. I can ping however both directions. how do i fix this error ?

This can be caused be a few things.

If you are using NIS, the ypserv may be down or unavailable.

If you are not using NIS, then check /etc/services and also the /dev/ptys

It looks to me like some serice/daemon is not running. Is this a production system?

Guys, is there any harm in running the startup script again ?

You haven't edited "/etc/services" or "/etc/inetd.conf" have you?
