System crash

Hi Gurus,

Please I need some help!
My HP-UX 11i server crashed. The option I have is to re-install the OS. I have a full backup of server on tape. What I don't have is a make_tape_recovery tape.
I would appreciate if someone would give me a systematic process of getting my server back online.

Unfortunately, without a make_tape_recovery archive, you will have to re-install HP-UX in order to rebuild your root disk. Then you can use your full backup to restore any required system files and your data.

You may not need to restore.

What were the circumstances leading to the crash? Installation of software? Power failure?

What happens if you simply use the on/off switch? If it fails to boot, how far does it get?

What happened was we could not log on to the server.In GSP we server was alive.In an attempt to resolve this, the server crashed. We have re-installed the OS and want to restore the backup data on tape.

How was the tape created? Did you use normal system utilities like tar or fbackup? Or did you use a backup package like OmniBack/DataProtector or Legato Networker?

How you go about restoring will depend on how the tape was created.

1. Log on to your Omniback server.

2. Download the Omniback software to the server you want to restore (it will have been lost in the crash).

3. Restore from Omniback. It's quite user-friendly. If you need any guidance with restoring, just ask.

OK, then you will need to re-install OmniBack and reload the OBII database so you can restore. The process is described in Chapter 10 of the OBII Administrator's Guide in the section titled "Manual Disaster Recovery of an HP-UX Cell Manager". The administrator's guide can be found here:

I have used the software to restore data several times. In this case of system crash, some of the filesystems on the tape are on the system after the re-installation of the OS. My issue is which of the filesystems on tape should I restore to replace the one on the system and in which order?

It's unusual to include vg00 in an Omniback backup. Perhaps it would be best if you could post a list of which filesystems are on your backup.

/var
/usr
/tmp
/home
/opt
/orapp

Please of these which filesystems should I restore in order to have my Oracle apps up and running? The restore process will overwrite some files.

Hi Sam

1. Try to boot the system from backup kernel in /stand/vmunix.prev

2. If successful, copy backup kernel as vmunix. You may lose few changes in kernel.
