system failed to boot

Hi Guys,

I have some problem booting up my system. When i try booting up.. it tells me attempt to boot up failed. I have only one harddrive in my system but the system tells me to choose an alternate booting drive.. does this mean that the boot sector in the harddrive is spoiled? in any case, how do i confirm this? and can i recover any data from the disk?

Best regards
Henry

Re: system failed to boot

hi,

does not look good.

to confirm that boot disk is "done". u may like to re-slot and boot-up again. if it really still fail ...

if u have no backup or make_tape_recovery tape (most recently taken), that is a double whammy.

good luck.

regards.

Re: system failed to boot

Henry,

if it is not a hardware problem.

you can use the OS cd to boot up to recovery shell and try to mount the vg00 to perform recovery.

Good Luck!!

Re: system failed to boot

more detail failure message ? There are few possibles,

bad LIF area, or missing LIF area, or corrupt kernel(vmunix)

you can use your CD media, and boot from the cdrom, select "Run a recovery shell" at main menu, then choose "r" Recover an unbootable hp-ux system.

if you can't get to the ISL prompt, or you can't boot the system normally, and would like to covery all options, rebuild the boot partition on the system disk and install all critical files required to boot on the customer root file system, select "a"

if you can get to the ISL prompt, but cannot boot vmunix, the system disk is damaged or corrupted. install only the critical files required to boot on the customer root file system, Select "b"

If you cannot get to the ISL prompt, but believe that there are no problems with the file systems, then select "c"

If you believe your kernel is corrupted, replace only the kernel on the root file system, Select "d"

Re: system failed to boot

Hi Guys,

I dun seem to have the media for my system.. it is running an old 10.20b, is there anyway I can boot it up? wat if I create and ignite recovery from a similar machine, can I use this tap to at least recover the boot sector?

thanks!

Re: system failed to boot

Hi Henry

1.Does the hard disk show up if you search for bootable devices at IPL ???

2. Try to boot from backup copy of kernel (/stand/vmunix.prev)

3. If backup kernel boot is unsuccessful, you may create recovery tape from a server with similar environment and boot from the tape and recover the system, but in this case you will have to review kernel configuration parameters and applications specific to this server.

4. Suggest to install additional disk and mirror two disks, if you have Mirrordisk/UX license or else think of upgrading to hp-ux 11.X so that you can order Mirrordisk/UX

Re: system failed to boot

Hi Henry,

Try to these first :

1. check whether the disk still recognised by the system on BCH mode, try to run search on it. If the disk already dissapear, this means the disk is went to heaven already 8-).

2. If still can recognised from point #1, try to login to single user.

3. If from the point #2, you cannot goto the OS level (single user). Try to shutdown, un-plug, plug-in the disk, and star the system again.

If point #3 cannot solved the problem, you need to change the disk. You can try to install the new disk from Ignite backup from other similar system (remember that all configuration from Ignite backup from original system, so you need to re-configure again) by running set_parms command and restore the available backup.

Hope this information can help you.

Cheers,
AW
