system halted

i was executing an /sbin/rc command on one of my servers, the system halted suddenly. When i tried to bring it back up it took me unto a different run level, system never booted properly.I did a complete shutdown, still there
no good startup. the prompts am getting are
as follows:
1. do you want to use this as a network or standalone server.
2. do you use this as a dhcp server, it is asking for the ip, the system is already networked with specified static ip address.
My question is how do i get the system back to the login prompt, please help, ASAP
thanks.

Re: system halted

Bassey, You are somehow executing the set_parms command, which is normally done when HP-UX boots for the first time.

It seems like you are booting from your installation disk....

If you have a contract I would place a call...

Re: system halted

It does sound like you have somehow gotten it to a state where it is executeing the set_parms command. I think I would go ahead and enter the information as appropriate for your machine. As long as you enter the appropriate information, then it should come back to the login screen.

Re: system halted

Interrupt the boot sequence, go to single user mode, exam /etc/inittab to see what the default run-level is defined to be. Examine carefully the rc script that you were executing when the box bounced.

Am I correct in assuming that this was a fully operational server before the bounce, not a new build?

Re: system halted

Bassey:

My guess would be that you were running one of the scripts that configure networking, probably something to do with configuring lan interfaces (?). I suspect that /sbin/rc has therefore detected an unconfigured interface and launched /sbin/set_parms. I would boot into single user mode and attempt to step up to the script you were running when the failure occured.

Re: system halted

my system came back again but i lost the connectivity from my terminal, i executed the /sbin/set_parms, it prompted me for a hostname, unfortunately i specified the wrong hostname. I had to reboot the system all over again, but i noticed that the hpux startup process says that there is an error in the rc.log. my filesystems are intact, there are no messages on dmesg or syslog. when i ran remsh from one of my servers, connection is not esterblished, but when running traceroute command i tend to see the ip address listing.
How do i regain all the previous parameters.
thanks.

Re: system halted

Bassey,

I would run the set_parms command.

check the man pages for the command before you do it. It is pretty straigtforward if you know your system parameters. Do you have a record of all your parameters?

Also, you assigned 10 points to a response, which tells everyone that your problem is solved. If it isn't solved put a new call in on the forum, because people won't check it out if is has the "rabbit in the hat" unless it is of interest to them.
. Also, if you have a contract place a call...
