tape
I need to backup informix logs using ontape -c utility
(continuous backup) is there any way to now that the tape is full and it must be changed.

Take a look at next doc,
http://www.j3iss.com/unix_backup/informix.html
once ontape detects that the backup device is full, it prompts for a second tape.
