Text Editor - X printer

When I try to print from within the text editor on the CDE front panel pull up menu, it says it can't find any X printer for any printer name I give it. Anyone know what it is looking for, and where do I configure it?

Re: Text Editor - X printer

CDE requires the Technical Print Service to be configured and running.
This can be done through SAM and assumes that a LaserJet printer
(capable of printing PCL graphics output) has already been configured
into the spooler.

1. From SAM, select "Printers and Plotters" -> "Printer
Server Configuration". Select "[Create...]" and use "hostname:1" as the
hostname and display number. Be sure that the [x] for "Automatically
start the print server" is selected then select [OK] to create the
server.

2. If this is a trusted-system, you will need to change the permissions
on the following file:

chmod 644 /etc/dt/config/C/sys.resources.

3. You will need to logout and log back in for the print service to be
configured into your desktop session. You should now be able to select
your printer from the [More Printers...] dialog box.

4. By default, all of the printers for an X print server are of the same
generic type. To take advantage of different printer capabilities,
system administrators may want to customize the default printer
configuration.

For instructions, refer to the "Technical Print Service System
Administrator's Guide". This manual is provided in online format
as well as PCL and Postscript. To display the manual, open the CDE
Help Manager and select the title of the manual. The PCL and Postscript
files can be found in /usr/share/doc/TechPrtServ/C. These man pages
will also be useful: tps(5), tpsprinter(4), tpsjob(4), tpsdocument(4).

Re: Text Editor - X printer

Thanks for the info - What I don't under stand is why a systems change would be made a default configuration if it was not installed by default?
Thanks again, will tinker with the TPS to see if its worth it, or if I should deactivate.

Not sure either ..could you elaborate ?

As to TPS .... not the best product in the world (enough said ....)

Re: Text Editor - X printer

Following the URL in Alex's posting, sounded like TPS was introduced as an update / patch (at least needed a lot of patching to activate correctly), but is the default for the desk top configuration. Have to add keywords to the config file to deactivate, not activate, but a full install does not setup the desktop config file with any choice? As to not being a well thought-out, quality product, I have been seeing that a lot from HP adjunct products that I am trying to work with, of late.
