tsm backup problems

Hi,

we are runing a tivoli backup client on a C3600 workstation under HP-UX B.11.00 A 9000/785.

When sending data to the tsm server we experience a very low throughput (under 100 KB/sec) and sometimes even interrupts even though it is a 100 MBit/s connection.
A Windows Client within the same network achieves transfer rates above 5000 KB/s.

Is there a known problem with tivoli/tsm under hp-ux 11.0, are there any patches necessary?

Thanks a lot for your advice.

Re: tsm backup problems

I've ran tsm on a hp client and had no network problems on a 100 mb full duplex lan line. Which version of tsm are you running? There are some patches available for 5.1.5, but it does not deal with any networking problems.

Re: tsm backup problems

Hi,
What version are you using?
You cannot beat a windows client (it proves its not as preemptive as unix...) but certainly have better transfer rate than 100KB/sec if you are talking of aggregate transfer rate you sould have an average of 400 KB/s which should give you network transfer rate (IBM dixit) approx 40MB/S

Im testing now on a small Kclass in hpux11 and letyou know

Re: tsm backup problems

On the K I found a version 4.1.2,
I wonder if what is worrying you is the way it works, did you choose backup? in which case it will do an incremental and so spend time to see what has changed since last backup, plus the fact that it will compress on the server before to transfer on your lan
So of course during scan the transfer slows and can stop waiting for the next big packet...

Re: tsm backup problems

Check for 100 Full. lanadmin -x PPA. You might be running Half. Check LAN team for "collisions" or other LAN problems.

Re: tsm backup problems

I am running Version 5, Release 1, Level 7.0, the latest I could find.

- Victor
I get the following transfer rates:
Network data transfer rate: 90.10 KB/sec
Aggregate data transfer rate: 77.58 KB/sec

I am doing an incremental backup ("dsmc incremental") and there is no compression ("Objects compressed by: 0%"). But looking at the total time for a backup (3:59 h) and the data transfer time of 3:30 h I think it is obvious that most time is spent for sending the data.

-Stuart
The interface is configured as "100 Full-Duplex Auto-Negotiation-ON".
I am in contact with the LAN team, but they don't really find a problem, all other LAN activities work trouble-free.

Thanks for your replies

Re: tsm backup problems

Hi, Malte
Is you TSM server an aix?
Id so Aix are the worst of unix when it comes to network reliability. The only way to solve (most) issues it to hard fix the lan drvers at 100Full duplex. This has therefore to be done also on the switch ports and of course the other boxes on the same lan...
So check the config of your server, switch ports AND adjust your hp
A fast way would be:If on the same lan as your Winserver then check the config of your Winserver it is most certainly at 100FD, if so fix your HP server to 100FD and test

Re: tsm backup problems

Is your tsm server running AIX and what kind of server is it? Is it RS6000?
