Unexplained reboot

Unexplained reboot

rp3440 hp-ux 11.23

Our system decided to reboot last night. The syslog or dmesg didn't reveal much. I did find this in /etc/shutdownlog:

22:05 Thu Jul 13 2006. Reboot after panic: Instruction page fault

Any ideas what that usually means? Memory problems perhaps? Is there anywhere else I might look to see what happened?

dmesg did reveal something odd though:

SCSI Ultra320 0/4/1/0 instance 4: Domain Validation forced SCSI Parameter fallback. Target ID 5 - Currently operating at Ultra160 Wide.

Does this mean that our SCSI controller's aren't running at their peak efficiency?

TIA,

Brad.

Re: Unexplained reboot

Brad,

On this case it could be almost anything, I would recommend you to pre-process a dump with Q4 and open a case with HP so they can analize it.

Jaime.

Re: Unexplained reboot

dmesg and syslog.log are NOT going to show anything regarding the reasons behind the reboot. They take effect AFTER the machine is back up.

You should check /var/adm/syslog/OLDsyslog.log and see if it offers any clue.

I also agree with the previous response...You should get HP involved and have them analyze the crash dump that you should have in /var/adm/crash.

My guess is that there was a software problem somewhere. It could be a patch issue with the OS or with one of your applications. You won't really know until the crash dump is analyzed.
