unknown hostname

My HP machine doesn't recongnize the hostname.
On my login screen, its says welcome unknown.
When I try to reboot the machine, It says failed for hostname.

What should I do to get the system back to normal?

Thanks in advance!!

Re: unknown hostname

Hi:

Edit '/etc/rc.config.d/netconf'. This is where the server's hostname is specified:

HOSTNAME=myhost

Re: unknown hostname

Run set_parms with hostname option.
man set_parms for more details.
IT is great!

Re: unknown hostname

Adi,
I changed my HOSTNAME to "HPUX_11-11", rebooted and found that the hostname came up as 'unknown'. Try applying a more meaningful value to HOSTNAME (even something as simple as 'computer') and don't forget to reboot afterwards.
Good Luck.
It's not impossible -- it'll just cost more...

Re: unknown hostname

Hi,

You can only have a hostname that is 8 characters, no more.

Re: unknown hostname

I would not use the underscore character as DNS will have problems. So set it to a maximum of 8 characters without the underscore.
