vxfsd

HI, wondering if anyone who has a rp7400 is experience high CPU time and CPU WAIT time for the vxfsd? It seems to be happening only on our rp7400's. Thanks,
Charlie

Re: vxfsd

can you define high? Most of the threads I see discussing high CPU with vxfsd point back to patching. Is the server patched?

Re: vxfsd

It's usually quite normal to see "vxfsd" (it manages your JFS filesystems) at least in the top 5 process list. For example on my L2000,
# glance -p
shows "vxfsd" typically in the 20s for disk IO and 0.5->1.0 on CPU utilization. But yours is higher obviously, what's the number ? Is the machine fully patched (especially with the latest JFS cumulative patch) ?

Re: vxfsd

Hi, Because of the application that is on the machine we are patched to June 2001. I know way behind. The CPU time is up in the thousands 5500. After reboots it grows pretty quickly. i.e. one of the boxes has been up for 12 days and CPU time is: 2931:34.
Just wondering if anyone elses vxfsd is growing this rapidly. Other hpux boxes are fine. with same patch levels so I think it is releated to rp7400's.
Thanks again,
charlie

Re: vxfsd

our 7400 is running 11.00, patched through June 2002. We have no issues with vxfsd running a lot of CPU time. Sorry... I don't see anything that would really indicate a general issue with the 7400.

Re: vxfsd

First , apologize for the "glance -p", it should be just "glance". (-p prints it output!). Ok .. it seems your vxfsd "is made or forced to work hard". It could be the disk IO that is affecting it or some other "bottleneck". What are you running on this server ? Are there a lot of disk IO activities on it compare to the other servers ? One more thing I'm curious to know .. if at all vxfsd is waiting for something to complete, what is it waiting for. Can you post this .. first find out the PID for vxfsd, then run ..
# glance -W
and enter the PID at the bottom of the screen, post the output. Does the "wait reason" shows "IO" all the time ?

Re: vxfsd

S.K. Chan, thanks for that command, the systems do a high amount of io but they are writing to xp512's over fiber. ALso, glance -W pid only blocked % that shows up is 98% on SYSTEM. All the other systems are running the exact same application. Only these machines rp7400's are showing high vxfsd times.

thanks again

Re: vxfsd

Hi Cindy,

It sure sounds like it might be patch related.
I'd run
swlist -l patch -a state > /tmp/patch.out
and look for patches in an inconsistent state - i.e. installed but NOT configured. As well as verifying patch levels between systems w/o symptoms & this one.

There have been patches issued for poor performance (PHKL_24027) & hang conditions (PHKL_21499) that have been out for a while.

Rgds,
Jeff

Re: vxfsd

HI, thanks for the response, but we have that patch on our system already. PHKL_24027. Also, the swlist -l patch -a state ALL the patches come back in a configured state.

Thanks
