Where to put dump?

I am about to install a new 11.0 server, which only has two internal disks.
I was wondering can I have the dump on the same disks as my vg00 or do I need it?

Yes, you can put dump on vg00.

As for do you need it, ask yourself this question. If a few months down the line your server crashes with an HP-UX dump (and you dont have a dump device configured) what are you going to tell your boss when he asks what your going to do about it to prevent it recurring ? Without a dump you cant pass repsonsibility for fixing it to HP, its on your shoulders.

Just in case you want confirmation by three...Trying to save some space by thinking about not setting anything for dump, would be like the old saying "cutting off your nose to spite your face".

I stand with the kings.....set up dump. You will some day have a crash...and you will need it then. This is reality.

Re: Where to put dump?

You can configure dump to an external disk, so long as it is part of the boot volume group. Under 11.x, the size of dumps has been greatly reduced. Going without suffifient dump space configured in such a case is foolhardy.

For myself, I also prefer to segregate dump from primary swap. This allows me to recover more quickly by delaying the actual writing of the dump to cooked space (/var/adm/crash) without risking a swap overwrite of the dump information.
