WHY SO SLOW?

How does this forum ever survive when it works so slow?

Re: WHY SO SLOW?

First - I love the forum but tried to run a search (hit search button) and then went to lunch (ham and cheese sub). Anyway, when I came back and the results were still pending. This even occurs late at night regardless of what network I'm on. I've spoken to other admins who all report the same.

Re: WHY SO SLOW?

I would have to say that's atypical. Many of us complain about response time and there have been some particular problems of late, but nothing like you're describing. Are you seeing similar results from other websites or is it just ITRC?

Also, no time to get an error, it just takes so long to get the search option to return...

Re: WHY SO SLOW?

Hi:

I understand that your query is purely rhetorical, but you can add value to it by directing it here:

Dan (the Forum Administrator) always keeps an "Issues" thead open every month, starting a new one very near the first day. It is most helpful for all of us if you document your observations there.

Regards!

Re: WHY SO SLOW?

All other websites are showing no problems in terms of speed. The slowdown I'm describing here is when hitting the search key it takes sooo long to respond. Others are reporting the same problem. So much so that they only use the site after hours.

Re: WHY SO SLOW?

You're right - the searches are the worst but I'm also in the US and don't see that kind of poor response - that's why I asked. I think there's something else at work here.

Re: WHY SO SLOW?

I've found at times that it can be entirely browser-related. I log off & close the browser & start another session (sometimes a different browser altogether) & the problem vanishes. I'll point no fingers, but just say it's usually a "Soft" browser......

My 2 cents,

Jeff,

You're so subtle!

I stick with Netscape myself.

Pete,

Hear ya....

I'm becoming a growing Mozilla fan. Sure looks & feels like the new NetScape w/o all the overhead of NS.

Re: WHY SO SLOW?

Just another datapoint: today appeared to be a worldwide slowdown, or more specifically, specific requests would hang, but if cancelled and retried, they worked OK. This was true of at least two dozen different sites I tried using a T3 link today. I don't think it was the HP search engines in this case because the symptoms were so widespread across non-HP sites.

Since it was sporadic, I would suspect that a coordinated network attack or possibly a DNS attack has been underway. I would not wait for more than 10-20 seconds for a search. Just cancel, then refresh the current site and search again. You'll may get a much quicker response.

Re: WHY SO SLOW?

Amen Bill!

I've gotten in that habit.
No response in a reasonable time - stop & refresh is the order of the day.

Re: WHY SO SLOW?

Yea just a moment ago I hit "my profile" and it simply never returned. Refreshing didn't help. As for in the US, I'm here in Florida (does that count?)

Re: WHY SO SLOW?

Florida "counts" - just not very well.

Re: WHY SO SLOW?

:-)

Pete, I would have given 20 points for that!!

Slowness in response is very erratical; at times even with T3-link, the response is bad and sometimes, with 56K dial-up, its satisfactory.

Re: WHY SO SLOW?

Whenever results take too long for me I hit refresh and they ussually show up pretty quick. What speed are you at and where are you?

Glad you got it, Manjeet.
