Re: X windows error?
1/ Open an hpterm window from a "working" system.
2/ Run "xhost +".
3/ telnet/rlogin to the failing system.
4/ export DISPLAY=your.pc.ip.addr:0
5/ hpterm
Does this work? What errors (if any) are reported?

Re: X windows error?
Do you have any error messages in /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log or /etc/rc.log ?
Does your /var file system okay? Do you have a lot files in /var/preserve ?
Normally if the system crashes or vi aborts due to an internal error or unexpected signal, vi attempts to preserve the buffer (in /var/preserve) if any unwritten changes were made.
what will happen if you try retrieving any file through -r option?
some thoughts ...

Solution1 - The font server needs to be configured to include the CDE
fonts in its catalog
EDIT: /etc/X11/fs/config
Append ",/usr/dt/config/xfonts/C" to the end of the
"catalogue = ..." line
EDIT: /etc/rc.config.d/xfs
Set the following variable: "RUN_X_FONT_SERVER=1"
EXECUTE: /sbin/init.d/xfs start
If the font-server is already running, kill it and
restart it.
2 - Force CDE to add the font-server to the X-Server font-path
by editing the Xsetup file. (NOTE: This steps REQUIRES
the IP address of the CDE session server. You can get
this information by running: nslookup `hostname`.)
COPY: /usr/dt/config/Xsetup to /etc/dt/config/Xsetup
EDIT: /etc/dt/config/Xsetup
Add the following line to /etc/dt/config/Xsetup replacing
"IPADDRESS" with the IP address of the server as returned
from "nslookup `hostname`":
$XDIR/xset fp+ tcp/IPADDRESS:7000 1>/dev/null
Then tell ReflectionX clients to use it :
rx -> settings-> fonts -> Font_Path : add tcp/IPADDRESS:7000 to it's head eg :
tcp/hpbrc104:7000 hp 75dpi 100dpi misc f330
save and restart RX try to login now ?

Re: X windows error?
%IP#%
with the actual IP address value and see if that works.
For your vi problem double check your patch, see if you got the latest vi patch for 10.20 ie PHCO_22228

Re: X windows error?
I followed your instructions. It took my a little long b/c I had to ftp the files off, edit them, & ftp them back. However, it did not work.
SW,
The link you sent did not display.
SK,
I've done the IP part but, I don't know if I have that patch b/c swlist core dumps. However, I do have 6/2001 cum. patch installed.

Re: X windows error?
RX-> Tools -> log file & trace files/option ?
Sounds networky to me if using DNS maybe edit nsswitch.conf to use files first on the hpux system and ensure pc's ip_address is in the /etc/hosts file ?
dr_dt output maybe worth looking at to .... tell me also if ps -ef | grep dtlogin returns anything ..you should see a parent dtlogin process ?
